Server 2022 Hyper-V cannot create production checkpoints

Hi All,

We have a Dell Hyper-v Cluster comprising of 3 physical hosts and 2 datastores. We have 30 Hyper-v VMs running on this platform. All are able to create production checkpoints with the excpetion of 2 servers. Both are setup as file servers and run day to day without issue. They were originally P2V from VMware to Hyper-V (All other servers migrated in this way can create checkpoints).

When creating the checkpoint, it stops at 7%, and throws the error 'file-server1' could not initiate a checkpoint operation: The file or directory cannot be created (0x80070052) and in the Hyper-V-MMS event log event ID 18012 and 18014 are generated.

Both data stores have plenty of available space to write the checkpoints, VM-store1 and VM-store2 are both 16Tb and have sufficient free space to perform a snapshot. All othe Hyper-v VMs create checkpoints in the same locations without issue.

Both servers that fail to create a check point comprise of the following:-

File-server1 ( 4 disks, 73Gb, 1TB, 2.1TB and 104Gb) total 3.16TB

File-server2 (5 disks, 52Gb, 262Gb, 1 TB, 5.3TB, 157Gb) total 6.43TB

Servers have been rebooted, I have tried moving the stotrage between the 2 file stores and changing the Hyper-V hosts, but a production checkpoint cannot be created, I have also tried a standard checkpoint but this also fails.

I am thinking there are 3 possible resoultions:-

  1. Open a case with Microsoft
  2. V2V the VMs again to build a fresh instance and see if this works.
  3. Completely build a new VM server and transfer the data

Does anyone have any suggestions how I could resolve this checkpoint creation issue please?

Many Thanks,

Richard

    Hey,

Check if Integration Services are installed in the Guest OS. In addition, you can check if VSS is enabled on the VM. Here is a nice guide on checkpoint issues troubleshooting: https://community.spiceworks.com/t/how-to-fix-the-error-hyper-v-checkpoint-operation-failed/1013983

As for V2V, you can use StarWind V2V Converter to move VMs between different hypervisors.
