Outlook 2019 crashing when attempting to manage rules

Hello,

I came here to report that an issue that was supposedly fixed is still around today in April 2024.

The problem was reported here:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/76572/outlook-2019-c2r-crashes-when-i-try-to-manage-rule?page=8#answers

We run outlook on a Terminal Server and everyone can set up their own set of rules. I logged in with one of our sales staff credentials and they have no issue managing rules. However, for another user, the problem is there and managing rules will crash their outlook and it restarts automatically.

When I look at the event viewer there are 2 errors that show up around that time I attempt to manage rules.

Failed to get the Crawl Scope Manager with error=0x80004002.

Failed to determine if the store is in the crawl scope (error=0x80004002).

Our version of Outlook is up to date.

Suggestions on how to fix this are most welcome.

    Hi @Eggs

    Welcome to our forum!

The error code 0x80004002 appear to be related to a Windows Search or Outlook Search issue, and you can try the following steps to determine the scope of the issue:

    • Run Outlook in Safe Mode: This can help determine if the issue is caused by an add-in. You can do this by typing in the Run dialog box (Outlook.exe /safe ).
    • Windows Updates: Ensure that all Windows updates are installed, as missing updates can sometimes cause compatibility issues with Outlook.
    • Office Repair: Perform an online repair of your Office installation. This can be done through the Control Panel by finding Microsoft Office in the list of installed programs, selecting it, and clicking ‘Change’ > ‘Online Repair’.
    • If the above doesn't help, please try creating a new profile. Removing a profile also removes any associated data files.
