Cal and licences needed to replace a domain controler

Hi, We plan to replace old windows servers (2008) which are used as Domain Controlers in our organization.
Our active directory is managing a forest with multiple subdomains.
The new servers will ONLY act as primary or secondary domain controlers on these subdomains ; So they will have the directory service and dns roles installed , but no file sharing, print server or RDS/TSE.

In this case: Must I buy CALs for every client computers ? (only for directory services, auth, gpo...) ??

If yes, I have actually CALs 2008 for those clients, is there a possibility to use/migrate them for the new servers in version 2019 ?

Best regards,

Yes, you'll need new Cals, read on here.
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/611193b5-c10e-4be6-b3c1-ffa7057fb2dd/ad-usercomputer-licensecal?forum=winserverDS

The 2008 Cals will not work for Server 2019 access. There is no upgrade for client access licenses, you'll just need new ones.

Its recommended to direct your legal licensing question to you reseller's trained licensing specialist or ask microsoft directly.

Thanks Patrick for the quick reply and link.
I was hoping to keep some bucks for other projects but unfortunatly I must forget that.
It makes windows server licence very expensive for just using active dir services on a secondary DC (I got a lot of client computers on this domain).

Best regards
