Prevent Edge Chromium From Opening for Mandatory Roaming Profile Users

I have some Windows 10 Pro workstations that were recently updated and received the new Edge Chromium browser. These workstations have mandatory roaming profile users configured to automatically login when the computer starts. For some reason, Edge Chromium is launching at startup, and I'm not sure how we can suppress it. I've tried configuring GPO by setting Computer Config > Admin Templates > MS Edge > Allow Edge to pre-launch > Enabled (Prevent) as well as Tab Preloading. None of these settings work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be honest, the only way to kill this behavior is to uninstall Edge and any feature KB updates that ran recently. That's how I got the message to go away. Until MS fixes this behavior, Edge won't be a part of our roll-out.

Hi,

Was the error message only for the users with Mandatory Roaming Profiles?
If for this situation, i would suggest you check if there are MS edge or Chromium apps and settings in the default user profile.
If there are, remove them from the user profile.

That link shows how to create a mandatory roaming profile. I know how to do that. That's how we currently have them setup. The problem is that Edge launches at open, and no GPO setting will block it from opening (trust me, I've tried, I've googled all the links you're going to post). I just want to suppress the message, nothing else.

Hi,

I tried to find a way to hide the error messages, but without luck .Though it was a default behavior.
Let's come back to the GPO again, to make sure the GPO applied but not worked ,did you check if the registry had been changed successfully?

Also try to configure another policy: Allow Microsoft Edge to start and load the Start and New Tab page at Windows startup and each time Microsoft Edge is closed and set it to prevent.
Then update the policy and check if the registry are changed successfully .

AllowTabPreloading

Hi,

I verified that both values for the registry keys are set to "0". That's what the GPO settings do for that key.

What's the version of the win10 clients?
I found that the policy works only for :

I was afraid that was going to be the answer.

Mandatory profiles have been wonky for a good portion of Win10's lifespan so far, so I was actually pretty thrilled when everything seemed to be responding so much better (not missing the Start menu and the modern apps were launching) under mandatory profiles in 20H2.

In the meantime, since we use this for our VDI environment (where we use our mandatory profiles) and we've been asked to provide Edge Chromium, it looks like I'll just be leaving a batch in our public startup folder that kills Edge (taskkill /F /IM msedge.exe) on login. It's an unsightly fix, but as you said, until MS fixes this behavior (which seems completely out of the control of the user/administrator), it looks like it's a necessary evil.
