Can't join meetings as guest from Linux Teams app's newest version any longer

Hi,
up until yesterday I was able to join Teams meetings using the URL from the invitation with the Linux App joining as a guest.
The version of the app was 'teams-1.3.00.25560'
After an update of the teams version to 'teams-1.3.00.30857-1' it is no longer possible to join meetings I was invited to.
All I get is a screen saying "You're not on Teams yet, but you can set it up for your organisation". (Which I can't).
I'm also always be forced to sign in with an account which I solely created to be able to join Teams meetings. From Mac users I know, it's not necessary for them to sign in to an account to be able to join the meetings. (The meetings are hosted from an enterprise with a subscription).

Can you please re-enable the possibility to join Teams meetings as guest using the native Linux Teams app.

Thankyou!

After no response or fix from MS it's time to start blogging and social media reports of their failure and unresponsiveness.

I have the same issue, not able to join meeting as a guest in app, but can join in chrome browser. Only the login screen appears in the app. Please fix this Microsoft, your teams app is unusable but much needed. Now I must start my old Win 7 computer every time, which is a pain. Version: 1.4.00.7556. Debian Buster Kernel: 4.19.0-16-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10.

Either it is a bug, dependency issue or a firewall issue I reckon.(but I have opened the stated outgoing ports.

Get this error code if I click on the three dots at the bottom of the login screen, don't know if it is related.

Haven't received your update for a long time, any update now?

But just reporting to the development team doesn't seem to help. You need to make sure that they will fix reported bugs. We are waiting for more than two months for updates, nothing happened so far.

Is there any known workaround?

I have the same issue on Fedora 33 with teams-1.3.00.30857-1.x86_64. What is strange is that downgrade to 1.3.00.25560-1 does not help.

Also, installed Ubuntu 16.04.7 TLS into a fresh virtualbox machine -- as somebody above suggested that guest works on old Ubuntu and then tried teams 1.3.00.30857 and 1.3.00.25560 with the same result as on Fedora -- i.e. I cannot join as guest.

Same teams link works fine on Windows 10 -- I am getting the expected "Introduce yourself" prompt.

The only suspicious error messages in ~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/logs.txt is

  • info -- setupHid: loading HID module for: {}

  • event -- failureReason: Module did not self-register., moduleName: media-hid, usePlugInHost: false, process: renderer, status: success, scenario: b1020afa-71c1-467b-9a04-cce95e958ea1, scenarioName: module_require, name: module_require, step: start, sequence: 0, delta: 1, scenarioDelta: 1, elapsed: 982, stepDelta: 0, vdiMode: 0, eventpdclevel: 3, Scenario.Name: module_require, Scenario.Step: start, Scenario.Status: success,

...

  • info -- setupHid: isSandboxed=false, runHidOutOfProc=false, enableHidDealyedRequire=false

  • info -- requireEx: {"name":"media-hid","usePlugInHost":false}

  • error -- preload: loading HID module failed

Could this be related to the issue?

I don't know if it was necessary but after downgrading and before launching teams again I
deleted everything under ~/.config/teams (previous verion) and "~/.config/Microsoft/'Microsoft Teams'" and "~/.config/Microsoft Teams - Preview"

Luckily this helped on my side (apart from still being annoying...)

I've also been getting bitten by this for the past month or so (Fedora 32). I was initially able to join Teams meetings as guest (organized by outside parties who have a Teams subscription), but it suddenly stopped working a while back. I'm going to try this downgrade and delete config workaround, although I can't tell for sure whether it's actually works for anyone else.

Just to confirm, downgrading worked on Fedora 32. Hopefully this gets fixed by the time the next version is released, though.

Just to help others, how to block teams to upgrade on Fedora (33, but it should apply to all supported versions):

  1. downgrade Teams if necessary sudo dnf downgrade teams, validate with rpm -q teams that it's version teams-1.3.00.25560-1.x86_64 and not 1.3.00.30857-1

  2. as MRutscher wrote, rm -fr ~/.config/teams* ~/.config/Microsoft* (I don't have anything else than Teams from Microsoft, so you might want to be more selective), else Teams behaves slightly strangely and forgets its config on each restart.

  3. exclude the package to make sure it doesn't slide in unintentionally: in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf add the line excludepkgs=teams in the [main] section.

  4. if you want to check if there is a new version available, call sudo dnf upgrade teams --disableexcludepkgs=main (answer N(o) of course if it isn't the case).

  5. remove the excludepkgs entry in dnf.conf once the issue is over (when? @Microsoft)

This is interesting -- somehow these steps do not help me here on the same system (Fedora 33). For me teams-1.3.00.25560-1.x86_64 cannot join as guest when I try it from Fedora 33 Live-CD (with no updates) in a virtual machine while the same link
opens fine as Guest on Windows and on Linux in browser.

The steps to reproduce, to try and exclude the differences between our two systems:

  1. Download Fedora 33 Workstation Live-CD Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-33-1.2.iso

  2. Run it a virtual machine

  3. Install teams with sudo dnf install https://packages.microsoft.com/yumrepos/ms-teams/teams-1.3.00.25560-1.x86_64.rpm

  4. Open Teams meeting link from a browser, then select teams app when prompted

If you will be able to join as Guest then something must be different in the meeting settings.

Is there a public known to be good link that we could use for testing to be sure the issue relates to teams app not to the meeting settings ?

There is another twist to it.
A friend of mine, a teacher, wanted to host a parents meeting and one of the parents offered to setup a Teams meeting on their work organisation's Professional Teams account.
When my friend tried to participate she was hit by this bug. So she tried to join the meeting using the the most current version of the installed Chromium browser.
Whenever the host tried to let her in (from the waiting room), the attempt was quit with the message "Sorry, something went wrong. We could not setup the connection" (or similar).
After wasting half an hour they quickly switched to a tool of a competitor to be able to hold the meeting at all. It would have made not much sense to held a parents meeting without the teacher present.

This added a great deal to Microsoft's reputation amongst the participants.

Lesson learned? MS Teams is not usable for us Linux users. Not from the client application nor when using the browser.
Great if you have a free choice which only conference system to use.
If you have not, you are lost as we all experience at the moment not even receiving any update on the progress.

This stupid bug cost my team 30min today and caused some embarrassment. Does Microsoft have no CI tests for the Teams Clients? Isn't that much easier to setup for Linux even than for Windows?!

The patform used is so modern and easily testable!

I was reasonably impressed with teams until it ruined a kick-off meeting with a big client today. I will never trust MS products again

hi everyone! , just wanted to let you know that, for Debian-based OSs, you can get the working version from their repo:

https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/ms-teams/pool/main/t/teams/

As the OP said, 1.3.00.25560 is the latest working version.

FYI, even after downgrading the Teams client to the previous version, I still wasn't able to screenshare on my meeting. I eventually figured out that joining the meeting using "Join with browser" (or "continue with browser"? I forget the wording) on Chromium browser seems to work just fine, at least on Fedora 32, so I'm ditching the fat client for the time being.

Since 3 days same Problem.

Teams 1.0 (actuell version, but going to help-->about says ,Version 1.0')
CentOS 7

It worked 2 months fine, but now now chance to join a meeting as guest.

After clicking the link, he openes the app,
but there is no option to join the meeting.

That's critical.

Holger
