Can't join meetings as guest from Linux Teams app's newest version any longer

Hi,
up until yesterday I was able to join Teams meetings using the URL from the invitation with the Linux App joining as a guest.
The version of the app was 'teams-1.3.00.25560'
After an update of the teams version to 'teams-1.3.00.30857-1' it is no longer possible to join meetings I was invited to.
All I get is a screen saying "You're not on Teams yet, but you can set it up for your organisation". (Which I can't).
I'm also always be forced to sign in with an account which I solely created to be able to join Teams meetings. From Mac users I know, it's not necessary for them to sign in to an account to be able to join the meetings. (The meetings are hosted from an enterprise with a subscription).

Can you please re-enable the possibility to join Teams meetings as guest using the native Linux Teams app.

Thankyou!

I have the same issue, not able to join meeting as a guest in app, but can join in chrome browser. Only the login screen appears in the app. Please fix this Microsoft, your teams app is unusable but much needed. Now I must start my old Win 7 computer every time, which is a pain. Version: 1.4.00.7556. Debian Buster Kernel: 4.19.0-16-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10.

Either it is a bug, dependency issue or a firewall issue I reckon.(but I have opened the stated outgoing ports.

Get this error code if I click on the three dots at the bottom of the login screen, don't know if it is related.

But just reporting to the development team doesn't seem to help. You need to make sure that they will fix reported bugs. We are waiting for more than two months for updates, nothing happened so far.

Hello, this bug should be fixed in the latest insiders version 1.4.00.13653 that was released yesterday. Please check if the fix works for you if you are using the insiders build

1) remove old teams package:
sudo dpkg -P teams
2) remove user configuration:
rm -rf ~/.config/Microsoft*
rm -rf ~/.config/teams*
3) install new package:
sudo dpkg -i teams-insiders_1.4.00.13653_amd64.deb

Still no luck, I did remove all the configurations you mention. I had to put the credentials again and so. It login well with normal account, but still is not allowing me to switch as guest. I can do so via web, but not via the teams package.
I'm installing it through the "apt" and not the "dpkg", but the version is the same, I guess it shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks for your help though.

Updated to the version in a Debian 10 and still having the same issue. Remove it, re-install it, still happening.

As the original poster of this issue, after testing it for the last couple of days, I can confirm the current teams-insiders version fixes the issue for me .
Additionally, when sharing a screen, the red boarder surrounding it is been shown again. (Which disappeared with an update sometime last year ...)

What I did on openSUSE Tumbleweed

zypper rm teams
rm -r ~/.config/teams
rm -r ~/.config/Microsoft*

zypper ref
zypper in teams-insiders

Which results in this package being installed:
teams-insiders-1.4.00.13653-1.x86_64

The precondition is that the teams (yum) repo was created inside /etc/zypp/repos.d/.

The RPM offered for download from microsoft.com is still an older (teams) version 1.4.0.7556.

I'm now able to join a meeting with via an invitation link send to me without needing to login at all.

So thanks for tackling this issue finally.

Hi @MRutscher-7366

Does anyone else have the same issue in your organization?

Do you have the same issue when using Teams desktop on Win 10?

Can you join Teams as a guest normally when you paste the link into browser?

In this case, it seems this issue is more related to your account. We recommend you contact your IT admin to see if they have deleted you from the organization.

Hi @JimmyYang-MSFT,

have you any updates on this issue for us?
Yesterday this issue has led to a very unpleasant situation.

As this is confirmed now by multiple people, may I ask if there is an ETA for a fix for this issue, if here is a GitHub issue for this or if there is the possibility for a PR to solve this regression?

I would like to emphasise the importance of a fix for this.

Hi @JimmyYang-MSFT ,

I'm able to participate as a guest user using the previous version of the linux teams application but not with the most current one.

The steps to join a meeting are:
Enter the meeting url (https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/ ....) into the browser.

I'm then presented with this page:

45156-00-teams-start.png

Then next screen I'm seeing after choosing "Open your Teams app" is this sign in screen:

45108-03-teams-signup.png

Other colleagues who join the same meeting from the Teams app on their Macs don't see this signup screen and are able to join the meeting as a guest without signing in.

If I click on "Continue on this browser" instead, I'm also transferred straight to the join meeting page. (without the need to sign in).
45202-04-teams-signup.png

The change was introduced when I updated the new version of the Teams Linux app. (teams-1.3.00.30857-1)
I'm still forced to sign in to the account as with the old version. There is no option not to sign in.
(Sidenote: This account is not related to the enterprise organising the meeting. I do join the meeting as a guest).

After having signed in the next screen displayed is this:
45159-05-teams-signup.png

I can't get past this page. If I click on Sign out I'm referred to this sign in screen as above.
(Sign up for Teams is no option either since all I'm trying to do is to join a held meeting as a guest)
I already tried to remove the settings, deleting everything unter ~/.config/teams (previous verion) and "~/.config/Microsoft/'Microsoft Teams'" and "~/.config/Microsoft Teams - Preview" (current version). This didn't change anything (except my previously chosen name was gone, as proof the settings where deleted).

So the problem can neither be related to my account nor the setup of the meeting since I'm able to join the meeting with the older version (even though, I'm forced to sign in) and also from within the Browser (Chromium) just fine.

People who are member of the organisation and who use the Teams windows app on Win 10 can join the meeting as a user. But this is unrelated to this problem.

Another update:

I can confirm this exact issue on a second machine running opensSuse 15.2. Exact the same behaviour.

A colleague running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on it's machine has the exact same problem now, no matter if he uses the provided deb-Package from the Microsoft download page or if he uses the package provided via Ubuntus SW manager.

I can confirm the issue on Fedora 33, the dialogue is stuck on the "Initialising..." window and I can't come further. This happened repeatedly with 3 different customers, to which I connect using my personal login (I'm not part of their respective organizations).

The issue completely disappears if I downgrade back, and reappears again if I upgrade again (did this a few times):

 Downgrade teams-1.3.00.25560-1.x86_64
 Upgrade teams-1.3.00.30857-1.x86_64

I know of colleagues impacted by the same issue, we're all holding tight to version 25560 for now, but a fix would be really helpful.

Thanks, Eric

Hi @MRutscher-7366,

Sorry for the delay response!

In this case, we recommend you try to use Private Mode to open the browser and see if this issue can be fixed. I did a test in my environment and we just need to print the name and wait the organizer to admit us to join Teams meeting.

Hi @JimmyYang-MSFT

as written in my previous post I am able to join as a guest when using a browser (chromium) without the need for signing in. There is no difference if I use an incognito window or just a normal browser tab.

Even if I launch the Teams (Electron) app for Linux from a private/incognito browser window, there is no difference.
I'm forced to sign in and with the new version I can't join as a guest any longer. So there must have been a change leading to this issue.
(As EricL has confirmed as well).

Launching the app from a private browser window is no solution, unfortunately.

Is there an issue tracker for the Linux Teams App I can report this on or is this the right place for reporting an issue?

Regards

Hi @MRutscher-7366,

I did a test in my environment with the version 1.3.00.30857(64-bit), Ubuntu 16.04. Unfortunately, we did not reproduce your issue.

For further investigation, i will also report this issue in Teams development. If there is any news, we will update in time.

Experiencing the same failure exactly as presented and confirmed by others. I am a government user and cannot sign on as guest. Web browser works but lacking the features and tools needed to run a hearing properly.

@JimmyYang-MSFT Please let us know what Linux distribution and stack your are using because you are getting reports from three users on the same upgrade with exacting issues.

I have another hearing on 12/22 and 1/6/2021. Please fix promptly.

Hi @SOTF-7055

The following picture is my Linux version:

51553-15.png

The test result also seems normal in my environment when using client or web client:

51554-14.png

I will share more information about this issue if there is any update!

So it seems issue is coming from newer version of distributions and their dependencies.
I know Ubuntu 16.04 is a LTS but it might be helpful from MS side to test on other newer distribution (18.04, 20/04), RedHat/CentOS, OpenSuse.

Same issue here:

  • Opened shared link to join Teams meeting

  • Browser opens link and suggests to open Teams app. Clicked "Launch"

  • Teams for Linux app opens (for some user does not, but this is another not related problem!)

  • Asks to login, entered e-mail and password

  • Screen shows: "You're not on Teams yet, but you can set it up for your organization."

  • Because I do not have company and I am not a teacher I am unable to setup Teams and simply join shared meeting as guest!!!

If this problem is not solved, I would recommend not use Teams for shared meetings, or simply not use Teams at all.

There is many users with different platforms that does not have commercial Teams accounts.

Here's another user (Ubuntu 20.04, teams package version 1.3.00.30857) with this problem.

Joining a meeting with the Teams program used to work fine without the need to log in. Now, the Teams tool has become useless for me. The only way I can join a meeting is via Chromium (as apparently Firefox is not supported either).

By the way, this happens on two different machines (both Ubuntu 20.04). I also tried to remove the directories ~/.config/Microsoft and ~/.config/Microsoft Teams - Preview, but that doesn't seem to help.
