Server 2016 File Indexing not returing resuts.

I have a Windows 2016 server running as a file server. I can recreate the issue local and over the network.
When I try do a search it returns incomplete results. I can even drill down to the folder where I know the file is in, it will not resolve the file name.

I have tried the following:

  • Rebuild Indexing on both the server and clients.

  • Move content to new share.

  • Moved the indexing database.

  • Limited indexing to select folders.

  • Deleted Indexing database and rebuilt it.

  • Removed Cortana.

I even performed reset by removing the windows.edb and setting the windows search registry to rerun setup.

I have tried several suggestions on line:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/shell-experience/windows-search-performance-issues
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/154b4f4d-2dfa-4024-93b4-ad7990a57b65/problems-with-windows-search-incomplete-results?forum=w7itproperf

If I turn off indexing on the server. I can get results but the is unacceptably slow (over 2 min for results).

Hi,

Have you checked the event viewer? Did you find any errors there?

Maybe other 3rd service affect this? Temporarily disable AV software to do a check?

Hope above information can help you.

I used to get this in the event log.

Event ID: 3104
Task Category: Gatherer
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXXXXXX
Description:
Enumerating user sessions to generate filter pools failed.

Details:
(HRESULT : 0x80040210) (0x80040210)

After I followed the suggestions in this article.
https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/reset-rebuild-windows-search-index-fix-problems/

That error has not returned.
Now all I see is just service start and stop notifications.

I did disable the A/V. That had no impact.
