Windows 10 logon take long time

Recently, we have observed our Windows 10 PCs taking long time to logon to desktop occasionally. After entering username and password, it may takes 10 to 30 seconds to complete the logon process and show Windows desktop screen.

For our environment, all PCs are joined to our AD domain. The Windows logon time is measured after PC restart or power-up, and then wait for a few minute after power-on. In normal practice, our users will shutdown PCs when leave office, and power it up when come office in next day.

It seems that 30 seconds Windows logon time is relatively long unreasonable. Could anyone suggest how to investigate this issue? Thanks a lot.

Regards,

Yawoo

Hello,

Can you please check, if the Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon policy is enabled. You can locate this policy at Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon.

If the policy is enabled, set it to disabled and see if it helps to resolve the issue.

Regards.

Thanks for your reply.
After checked, this policy is not enabled or not configured in our AD domain. So, it is not reason anyway.

Hi,
What version of Windows 10 are the machines? Patching and drivers up to date?
What happens when you log on to their machine with a new user? If the problem is gone then it is in the affected persons profile, otherwise, it is with the machine.

By turning off the Fast Boot feature in Windows 10, domain logins may become fast.

Hope above information can help you.

Dear Jenny,

Our machines are using Windows 10 1809 with monthly patch MS20-DEC installed. The fast boot feature is already disabled to all Windows 10 machines in our current practice.

I have not tried to logon new user account, and may get a try. Please be informed that the logon time spent can be 20 sec or 30 sec in the same machine. The long logon time is occurred occasionally in the same machine, and it cause in difficulty to identify or troubleshooting this issue. Is there any measuring tool to collect the logging to analyze the logon process?

Best Regards.

Hi,
For problems relating to the logon, it may be necessary to capture a logon with Process Monitor enabled.
For your reference:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
When troubleshooting a logon issue, it is important that the Process Monitor application is running when a user logs into the endpoint.
This can be done by running the tool as an Administrator and selecting the option from the Options menu

For the slow logon issue reported, we have performed a series of comprehension tests. If we disconnect the PC from AD domain, the logon time can be reduced to less than 5 sec by logging-in local account. It is not related to local account or domain account sign-in. Both type of accounts use 30 sec to logon in domain PC. If we re-join the PC to AD domain, the logon time will take up 30 sec again.

We have tested to not apply any GPO policies to the tested domain PC, but the logon time is kept as 30 sec. It may not relate to any software drivers, since it logon very fast in the case of standalone PC. Any advice on setting on domain-side we can investigate further? Thanks.

I was able to diagnose "something" using xperf as mentioned here: https://superuser.com/a/1012442/39364 wish there were a better answer but...
