How to Upgrade SCSM 2012 R2 Datawarehouse server to SCSM 2016

Hi,

I has been follow the steps in this post for upgrade procedure, but when come to Step 9: Install a New Data Warehouse Server in the Lab Environment, it is quite confusing. Is it I need to install DataWarehouse 2016 in new server, or install DataWarehouse 2012 R2 to new server? I been try to install DataWarehouse 2012 R2 in new server (which OS is Windows Server 2016) and restore database into new server and make some configuration (follow steps Move the Service Manager and data warehouse databases | Microsoft Docs) but System Center Data Access Service cannot be start up ( I believe is caused by database restored issue).

May I know is it the correct step for Data Warehouse management upgrade?

Thank you.

Current SCSM environment is SCSM 2012 R2 (SCSM Management Server and SCSM Data Warehouse)?
Regarding the instructions from your link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/scsm/set-up-lab-with-production-data?view=sc-sm-1711

The new lab environment should be the same version of the current SCSM environment.
After the lab environment is up and running without issues you can follow the upgrade process for SCSM 2012R2 upgrade to SCSM 2016: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/scsm/upgrade-environment?view=sc-sm-2016

Current SCSM environment is SCSM 2012 R2.
It mean to use new lab environment for in-place upgrade?

Thank you.

Yes. That is an option for an inplace upgrade. Like described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/scsm/upgrade-environment?view=sc-sm-2016

First inplace upgrade in your test/lab environment which is based on the production environment. If everything is working fine inplace upgrade on the production enviornment.
