Where are the updates?

The latest version of teams for Linux is version 1.3.00.5153 from the 20th of March 2020.

On https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/get-clients it is stated "Microsoft Teams ships monthly".

So when is the next update coming out? I see Linux users rapidly falling behind in functionality compared to Windows users.

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

Yeah, Linux is certainly a 2nd class citizen at the moment. It works for me (Arch via AUR package), but it would be nice to at least get some of the new features with a "same week" release as for Windows. It's all built with electron, so really shouldn't be a whole lot of cross-platform issues. I don't need the background magic either, but keeping up with the less "toy" type of features would be nice.

I see the page I originally linked to has now been updated to remove the phrase "Microsoft Teams ships monthly".
So I guess this means "Teams for Linux gets updated when we get around to it but it is not a priority for us."

Oh well...

A clear and honest Statement will do.

Is the Linux Client maintained, and keep up to date fast with the newest features ?

Yes or No

I must agree, we are paying a lot of money for Microsoft products in our School.
Keep the Linux Client up to Date.
We need the multi platform support of Teams.

How do you get 3x3 Windows working on Linux? If you mean 9 cameras in a meeting it isn't working for me on 1.3.00.30857. Because my Screen is too small?

Fun fact, they released a new version (1.4.00.4855) yesterday, after 3 months AND .... we still have the 2x2 grid while Windows and Mac useres have 7x7 it's amazing. It seems like the startup company Microsoft is not capable to deliver a high quality product. Even though they get paied for it.

Hi @FelixFischer-9334
it's not working because Microsoft removed that feature again after two weeks or so last year, and since then it never came back.
We are missing lots of imporant features like
- blur background
- 3x3 grid
- Application sharing
- breakout rooms
- and many more

@SharonZhao-MSFT said they will escalate it 26 days ago. We have a UserVoice running with more than 4,340 voices. But there is no transparent information when we could expect a full featured linux client nor any updates.

@SharonZhao-MSFT and @JimmyYang-MSFT doesn't take care at all about the situation.

Yeah I absolutely agree, I don't want to go back to windows because I don't like it, but now I almost need to for my classes, this is frustrating.

Updating slowly, im on teams-insiders-1.3.00.16851-1.x86_64 and
teams-1.3.00.16851-1.x86_64 using Fedora 32.

It's mostly stable, there are issues with it capturing the audio device sometimes but that may be due to other programs. It generally occurs after hibernate, audio works for other apps just not teams.

Would like to see more than 4 individuals at a time and change background. Looks like we are in this pandemic state for some time and those two features would do wonders

Matt

Something is moving! The "teams-insider" Deb package version 1.3.00.14051 appeared yesterday:
https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/ms-teams/pool/main/t/teams-insiders/

I believe team-insiders is a kind of beta scheme.
However I have to say I can't see any of the new features, like blurring the background or rising hands.

I have noticed an improvement though, the previous version wasn't very stable on Ubuntu 20.04, it was sometimes freezing.
That problem seems to have disappeared on the new team-insiders package.

Yes, there are still some new functions in Teams for Linux needed to be updated in time.
If there is any new announcement, we will inform you in this post.

We're now over half a year later and Linux is still on exactly the same client. Six months without updates? Not even simple updates like: being able to react to a specific message in a conversation. This is an unmissable feature.

I'd also really like to have the background blurring feature, though it's a bit of a gimmick.

Anyway: half a year without updates, I wouldn't be surprised if the Linux client is full of security bugs. Do better Microsoft!

It gives the impression that Teams for Linux is intentionally not intended to provide the same functionality.

Microsoft is very selective when it comes to their support and stance on open source and Linux - gives the impression that 'one hand doesn't know what the other is doing' - because they support selected OSS projects and development - also support Linux on Winodws11 (WSL) - but then either intentionally (for nefarious reasons) or unintentionally keep the Teams Linux client in the dark ages . . . It's a shame to say the least! There are enough Linux enthusiasts which are willing to give feedback and be guinea pigs . . . and thanks to the (not so welcome) pandemic - working from home (WFH) is booming - so Microsoft should show some Love to Linux users with their premier communications tool!!! So typical . . .

Hi Mike!
To my knowledge, if the repository was installed correctly, then your system package manager should handle auto-updating in the same way as other packages on the system.
You can also try to search its latest update function on O365 RoadMap.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Teams%2CIn%20development

The repository is installed correctly. If you look at the contents of the repository, there have been no updates to it since 1.3.00.5153.

The only entry in the roadmap that you link to which is related to Linux is one called "Teams for Linux Client" due in Q4 2019. I'm really missing the ability to take control of a colleagues shared screen which has already been rolled out to Teams for Windows. Cool backgrounds are something I can provide myself in Linux, so I'm not hurting for that, but Linux users are being left out on essential features and bug/security fixes.

I thought the whole idea behind using Electron was to make it simple to create a cross-platform Teams client and keep it up to date.
