RDS - Print Notification Stuck

Hi.

Using published apps, in RDS (RD session host) on Windows Server 2019:

The notification in IMG-1 below, is presented to the user when printing (IMG-1 example is from Outlook, but it happens in all applications).

This is how it is supposed to be. So far so good.

...

But when the print is complete, the image of the notification is still stuck on the screen.

Nothing happens when you click the Cancel (Avbryt) button, because the server has already removed the notification, but the client still presents the image of it on the screen.

The only way to get rid of this residual image of the notification on the user's screen, is to log out the user from the RD host.

...

This happens on multiple RD hosts, with multiple printers from different brands, connected to multiple print-servers.

The only common denominator is the underlaying MS RDS technology.

Please help us.

Hi Pascual!

We disabled "Use advanced RemoteFX graphics for RemoteApp"

You can find it here using GPO:
Computer Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Remote Session Environment

Just remember that this is a workaround that disables a lot of nice visuals as well, so you have to choose what is more important.

Work like a charm Lars!

Thumbs up from Paraguay!

Hi,

Please help to confirm below questions.

  1. Are the printers redirected from clients to the remote session or are they deployed on the RD session host servers?

  2. If the user print in Notepad or Word, will the issue persist?

  3. If the user locally logged on to the client and use the local printer to print in Outlook, will the issue persist?

  4. What are the versions of your clients, RD Session hosts and printer servers?

Thanks,
Eleven

Hello @ElevenYu-MSFT

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

  1. Printers are deployed from GPO on the RD session host servers.

  2. Yes, the issue will persist in Notepad, Word and other applications.

  3. Printing from a local computer, running locally installed apps: the issue will not persist.

  4. Clients = Win10 20H2 || RD Session hosts = Server 2019 1809 || PrintServers = Server 2012 R2

Hi @LarsOlsen-7119 .

Please do following test:

On one RD Session host, use web browser to open the remote apps and proceed printing.
Check if the notification will disappear after the print job is completed.

Thanks,
Eleven

@ElevenYu-MSFT

You want me to log on to the console of one RDhost, browse to RDweb and launch a RemoteApp?

This will make one server logon to anoter server... What will this prove? I can't ask my users to work like this.

Because all the actions happen on the session host since the printers are deployed on the session host servers. we would like to confirm if the issue is releated to clients or can be narrow down to only session hosts.

The problem is sporadic. Meaning it does not happen every time.

How do I distinguish between a negative test, and pure randomness?

If the issue happens randomly, You might need to capture some dumps or traces to further investigate the issue, which I suggest to contact Microsoft Customer Support and Services where more in-depth investigation can be done so that you would get a more satisfying explanation and solution to this issue.

Hi Lars. I have the same issue with a Windows Server 2019 RDS and RemoteApp on the printing process. We can print our files but the message of printing stuck on the screen. Did you solve that? Could you share how?
