Anyone had success with setting up a Gmail POP Account in Outlook for Mac?

I have Outlook for Mac and have been unable to add a new Gmail Account with POP Settings. It was tricky to get to the IMAP/POP setup screen in Tools > Accounts, but once there, I can enter in all the details. When I click on Add Account, no success. Has anyone else had any success with POP setup in Outlook for Mac? Frustrated to say the least!

Hi @PatriciaHennessey-1152,

It was tricky to get to the IMAP/POP setup screen in Tools > Accounts, but once there, I can enter in all the details.

What's your specific meaning of "tricky to get to the IMAP/POP setup screen"?
Actually, I have tested on my Outlook for Mac (version 16.46) and found I could set up my Gmail account with pop settings normally, here are my detailed steps:

  1. Tools>Accounts>Add account>type my gmail address>choose the provider

    64318-snipaste-2021-02-05-13-28-46.png

  2. choose IMAP/POP>type the server and port

    64402-snipaste-2021-02-05-13-42-54.png

  3. Then click Add account and found the Gmail account was added successfully

    64364-snipaste-2021-02-05-13-30-10.png

Please kindly check if your steps have any differences with mine. If you still need further assistance, please provide me with more information about it(client version, configuration steps etc.). If your issue has any update, please feel free to post back.

That doesn't work for me. When I follow the steps, I receive an error when I try to create the account. "Unable to sign in. Check your credentials and try again." I know my email account and password are correct because I have logged into Google several times to verify. There is an issue with POP and Outlook for Mac.

Thanks for your update. I'm also testing on Outlook for Mac, so what's the version of your Outlook for Mac(), please first ensure that you have updated to the latest version.
Could you configure other pop account on your Outlook(such as Outlook.com or others)?
If you could add other pop account in your Outlook, the issue may be related to your Gmail account itself, have you turned on the 2-step verification of it? It's suggested to check your account setting in your web mail and created the App password to test if your account could be added normally with it in Outlook(Manage your Goggle account>Security>Sign to Goggle>2-step verification).

If that's invalid or the issue also occurred on other accounts, it may be related to your client itself, it's suggested to create a new profile and readd your account to check.

I have tried setting up my gmail account as POP on two computers. My Mac Desktop is still on Catalina Version 10.15.7 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.43 (20110804). On this computer, I have my personal gmail account setup as POP and there are no issues. This was established way back when I originally installed Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011. I recently upgraded to Microsoft 365 and my email accounts didn't have any negative impact at that time. I've not switched to the new version of Outlook on this computer because I read that POP doesn't work with this release. When I attempt to setup a new gmail account as POP, it doesn't work. My configurations in gmail are exactly the same as the other gmail account that does work.

My MacBook Air has been upgraded to Big Sur Version 11.1 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.45 (21011103). If I try to add my gmail account as POP, I receive the same error message as I do with my Mac Desktop (noted above). If I switch to the "New Outlook" format, I don't even have the option of selecting POP. The only accounts supported are Office 365, Outlook.com, Google and iCloud. That same pop up window shows COMING SOON: Exchange, IMAP, Yahoo. So, I essentially cannot move to the "New Outlook" format because my personal company uses an Exchange Account for all of my contacts and calendar.

A couple of things to take note of: 1) I use an Exchange Account to capture my calendar and contacts because a few years back, Microsoft stopped supporting the sync capability between Outlook and iPhone. I had to use an Exchange Account if I wanted to continue to use Microsoft Outlook to capture my contacts and calendar and have that sync with my iPhone. 2) If Microsoft is going to release new versions and "new" looks of Outlook, then they should be sure that it works with customer configurations. Right now, I cannot setup a POP email account on the old look of Microsoft Outlook and it's not even an option in the "New Outlook", and I'm not sure if this will even be available. I also am not able to use my Exchange Account until Microsoft enables that feature in the "New Outlook".

Super frustrating to say the least.

Thanks for your update, I'm still reseaching for your issue. Based on my research, "Google has turned off Basic Authentication by default for all new accounts and accounts which haven’t synced within the last 30 days and only lets you authenticate via the OAuth 2.0 standard.", which means we may need to enable the basic authentication or 2-Step Verification to configure the pop account in Outlook, and I could reproduce your issue when I configure my Gmail account with the normal password, so it's suggested to follow this article to enable 2-Step Verification and set the app password to configure your Gmail account in Outlook.(Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)
Hope that would be helpful to you.

Thanks for the latest update and information. I turned on the 2-step verification with the gmail account and then attempted to add the POP account to Microsoft Outlook for Mac and I'm still getting the error message that the user credentials/password is not valid. So, not sure what to do next.

Hi @PatriciaHennessey-1152,
Thanks for your update, could you log in your gmail automatically instead of configure it with pop manually? As I know, we usually could configure the gmail account in Outlook 365 automatically, in order to further confirm your issue, it's suggested to log in your Gmail account in Outlook 365 directly.
I mentioned that you have turned on 2-step verification, have you also set the app password? If not, it's suggested to set a app password and re-login your account with the new app password to check.
Also, as mentioned above, the issue may also occur when we haven't turn on "less secure app access", please try to turn on it to test if the issue has any difference.

Hope that would be helpful to you.

Hello...I've tried all different combinations and possibilities. Nothing works. My MacBook Air has been upgraded to Big Sur Version 11.1 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.45 (21011103). Whether I have the old Outlook or switch to the New Outlook, it doesn't work. If I switch to the "New Outlook" format, I don't even have the option of selecting POP. The only accounts supported are Office 365, Outlook.com, Google and iCloud. That same pop up window shows COMING SOON: Exchange, IMAP, Yahoo. I want a POP email account, not IMAP. Right now, I have two emails sitting in my gmail account. I've setup the Gmail account in the New Outlook format and it doesn't work. I'm sure if I switch fully to IMAP, it would work. However, that is not what I want. see attached.

Hi @PatriciaHennessey-1152,
Thanks for your update,
For your issue, if you indeed could add your account normally with Imap in your Outlook for mac and the issue only occurred on POP, it may be related to your client itself.
In order to avoid the interference of corrupted profile, it's suggested to create a new profile and readd your account to test.
If that's still invalid, corrupted outlook client may also cause it , we could also try to uninstall the Outlook and reinstall it to check.

Nothing is resolved at this point. I've worked on this for hours and hours. I cannot setup a POP account. I cannot use the new Outlook format. None of the suggestions provided thus far have worked.

Hi @PatriciaHennessey-1152,
Sorry to hear that, due to your issue could be reproduced on your 2 clients(Mac desktop and MacBook Air) and we have tried to reinstall a new Office in your client to test but in vain, I'm afraid the issue may be more related to your account itself instead of Outlook client. In order to further comfirm it, if it's possible, please kinldy try to configure your account with pop on other mail client or add other pop account(such as outlook.com or others) in your client as mentioned above to check.
If you we could confirm the issue only occurred on this specific account, due to here we mainly focus on general issue about Outlook desktop client, it's suggested to contact your account support to get more help, hope your issue would be resolved soon. If not, please kindly provide us with more information about your issues and I would continue to research it with you.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. I've tried setting up my gmail account as a POP account and it doesn't work in Microsoft for Outlook nor does it work in Outlook.com. The Mac Mail doesn't support anything but IMAP or SMTP accounts. I don't want to leave my email messages out on the Gmail server, I want to be able to download them to my computer and place in the folders I've created on said computer.

Please see the attached .jpg of the message received when I attempt to use the new Outlook format for Mac. Gmail POP is not supported. This is an issue for me as that is what I use and I don't want to leave my messages out on Gmail's server forever. When will Microsoft support POP in the new Outlook format?

Hi @PatriciaHennessey-1152,
Thanks for your update and sorry for misunderstanding for your issue, I just focused on your original post about the crendential error when you tried to configure your pop account in normal version of Outlook.
As you know, the new Outlook for Mac is indeed not supported pop account now, but please believe that Microsoft are working on bring back this feature in the future, you could vote this idea in our uservoice, which may increase the priority for our engineers to create a possible option or feature that can be included in the future updates of the program. Let's give this "new guy" more time and patience and hope this feature would come soon.

Thanks for the update. I've added my feedback to the user voice community. It really is a shame that POP3 is currently not supported with the new Outlook for Mac. Over the years, I have faced different issues and it is usually due to the fact that Microsoft just doesn't want to support the functionality any longer. For example, I bought Outlook for Mac 2011 and was syncing all of my contacts, calendar/events from Outlook for Mac 2011 to my iPhone via iTunes. One day, it just stopped working. No notification, Microsoft just took that functionality away even though the sync button still appeared in Outlook. Really frustrating! I then had to scramble to figure it out since all of my contacts on my iPhone disappeared. I then figured out that I could get an Exchange account, store all of my contacts and calendar/events in that account and that would be sufficient. I have an Exchange account for my business, but I don't have that for my personal email accounts. I'm not going to pay for another email account nor am I going to pay Google for additional storage simply because Microsoft thinks POP3 isn't needed. Why should I pay for storage when I have 1 Terabyte on my Mac Desktop. Really, really, really disappointed with Microsoft's customer service right now.

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the incovenience caused by the lack of pop-up accounts in the new Outlook for Mac. I do understand your need of pop account in Outlook, but please kindly believe that Microsoft has noticed it and is working on it now. We appreciate the time you take and hope that in the near future, this feature can be included. Thanks for your support and understanding.
