KB4601318 fails to update, fails at 24% Windows Server 2016

Hello,

I have 3 virtual servers that have this exact same issue where when I try to update KB4601318, it stalls at 24%. The servers are 2016 servers, I have disabled anti-virus, I have rebooted, followed instructions on this blog, added RAM and enabled and disabled firewall. I have updated 15 other servers in my environment successfully, running the same antivirus software, same kind of setup. The servers all have 2 or 4 processors, 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM and at least 200+ GB of available disk space. No errors in the event viewer that I can see.

I've let the update run on these machines for 2 hours and what happens is that it will install KB890830 and KB4601392 on all of these machines but not KB4601318 on any of them. It gets stuck at 24% and then eventually stops and reads "KB4601318 is available" "Updates are ready" and Download button is enabled. If I click it, it goes through the exact same cycle where it stalls at 24% again.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Same situation here, setting up brand new AD environment, ESXi... Both DC and term server both stuck at 24% since yesterday... New servers, no past issues, confused on this as well.

Both an older 2016 Hyper-V VM and brand new 2016 Hyper-V VM unable to complete updates! Hope this is fixed soon. I doubt a server with no updates will last for long!

So if we've already downloaded and installed the SSU we will need to install the CU using the workaround? Or should we wait until a fix is available?

I've successfully ran the KB on 2 machines at this point. Pretty much the steps other people listed. I can do on a few VMs but dozens or hundreds across an organization would not work for this....too resource intensive for 1 admin!

-Download the update from Microsoft Catalog (.msu file)

-Stop Windows Update Service. For me it didn't stop so I had to set the service to Disabled then go to a command prompt and run "sc queryex wuauserv" then do a "taskkill /f /PID xxxx" (where xxxx is the PID listed from the prior query command).

Delete or rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ folder

Now run the .msu update file. A few times I got a pop-up about a stub file error. What is that? Anyway, I waited a minute and ran the .msu again and it unpacked and ran successfully.

Set Windows Update back to manual

Reboot. KB installed.

Right, so I already tried the manual update, it does the same thing. It stalls out at 24%.

I mentioned it above but I wanted to clarify (because it's buried in my post) but I was able to successfully install the SSU's (KB4601392) on all three machines.

Try to reset Windows Update components
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-resources
Then, manually install KB4601318 again.

Hey there - a short Update!
I managed to fix it for myself!
I really don't know what step fixed it so im just giving your the workflow i did .

  1. I shut down "bits" and "wuauserv" with the net stop command.

  2. I deleted all possible files from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

  3. I tryed it again with Windows Update - a few times while reebooting after every 30 mins into process after there was no new entry to the cbs log.

  4. After one of those shutdowns i downloaded the Update from Microsoft Catalog what @DSPatrick already posted above.

  5. I restarted the Server again and the first thing i did after the reboot was opening the cmd and task manager to see what PID the wuauserv became.

  6. In the opened cmd i typed taskkill /f /pid [YOUR_PID] and executed the downloaded update manually. After that the Update ran to the 100% in the manual installation.

  7. After the next reboot it worked.

I hope i could help u!

We ALSO have this issue, stuck at 24%, tried everything in this thread, even turning off and back on again ;). 15 servers and only 1 has this issue.

Had to make an account and post here so certain individuals can stop saying how new threads need to be made.... ;) Posting what you have tried helps us all narrow things down.

Found some other threads on google saying the same thing, stuck at 24%.

This months updates are going great... :/ Another long night, this plus 1909 not getting CU for this month, maybe someone should start another thread about that. Ha

At the moment the fix is to download manually as mentioned here:

  1. Download the update file as @DSPatrick mentioned on this URL: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4601318

  2. Taskkill the Windows update service (yes, kill - it will be stucked)

  3. Disable the service temporarily (yes, disable. otherwise it will start before you are able to clean SoftwareDistribution)

  4. Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder content.

  5. Switch the Windows update service back to Manual

  6. Run the installation from the downloaded update file

  7. Takes approx 30 - 45 minutes to install and additional standard reboot time

Just tested this approach and it worked fine.

So, I followed your procedure exactly, step by step and unfortunately I am still stuck at 24%. This is really frustrating!

So that means the manual installation failed? Just to make sure you downloaded the MSU file and on step 6 you tried to install the update from this file, not Windows update?

Do not try to attempt to install it after step 5 using Windows update. It will fail again.

But honestly If it is not critical I suggest to wait until this is fixed officially.

Nope.

Yes it’s Critical.

We’ve already tried the basics...

Yep, so my procedure has been a little bit different so let me be precise in what I am doing. I do the following :

Downloaded the update file on this URL: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4601318

Try to end the Windows Update Service but it will not end with NET STOP WUAUSERV

DISABLE the Windows Update Service entirely and Reboot the server

Run a Net Stop WUAUSERV from command prompt (returns Service Not Started) - this is just to verify that windows update services aren't already running.

Run a Net Stop BITS from command prompt (return Service Not Started)

Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder content.

Switch the Windows update service back to Manual

Run the installation from the downloaded update file

It just runs and runs forever and never completes for me, after about 90 minutes if I go to open System/Windows Update, it displays that the update is stuck at 24% there.

This worked for me ...

Did a couple things differently in case it helps someone else having an issue.

Switched the Windows Updates Service startup setting to Disabled.
Rebooted Server.
Disabled Internet access on Server.
Killed/Renamed %windir%\SoftwareDistribution Folder.
Switched the Windows Updates Service startup setting to Manual.
Ran KB4601318 patch previously downloaded...

Only real difference from above is killing the Internet access as well.

Same here. All Azure 2016 VM's stuck at 24%.
Update: I installed one VM following the procedure above and this worked, but this seems a global issue which microsoft should fix. I have many machines with the same issue

Same.....numerous Azure 2016 servers stuck at 24% with that specific KB. No other issues with other KBs. Microsoft needs to address this.

Yeah, we can't hack our way through manually updating every single machine with the failure. This is absolutely an issue Microsoft needs to fix ASAP.
