Hyper-V cluster sizing - new hardware

Hi everyone,

we want to exchange our current hardware computing system against a new one.
As we moved things like Exchange, CRM etc to SaaS in the MS cloud and we proceed using cloud services there should be no need to get exact the same system.

I am searching a way to size a Hyper-V host that can take all our VMs. I already found lots of articles (many of them are 10 years old) but they stay kind of vague. Which is ok as every setup is different.

Is there a tool like "Azure Site Recovery Deployment Planner for Hyper-V" that collects all details and can give sizing recommendations? Or can you give me a hint how where to find better information on how to do this?

Also maybe in the direction of Azure Stack HCI with Win2019 and S2D. Which would be the future after our 3PAR is going "end of life"

Hi,

I am searching a way to size a Hyper-V host that can take all our VMs.

Firstly, you need to calculate the total size of the VMs, then make a drive the store the VMs. Then we need to calculate the memory the VM need to start at the same time, the Host memory should be VMs running memory + Host running memory.

As for the Hyper V storage, we can use the local attached drive, or shared storage on SAN, storage space on Serve 2019.

Hi Anne,

thanks for your answers. I already collected these numbers as they are "hard" numbers.
But CPU Core to vCPU isn't. High Performance Systems should "have" a lower number - finding out this number is my current task.
An all flash storage system direct attached should handle my IOPS.

So i am searching a tool that can help me with that - like the ASR Planner but instead of sizing me the Azure VM to my on prem VM. Size me my Hyper-V Host (or Azure HCI host) to fit my needs.

Hi Anne,

this does not help with the cpu need, ram needs etc. But i will go with the 1 Core to 8 vCPU as a beginning and plan much overhead :)
