Looking to implement an Intune/Autopilot laptop provisioning solution for a startup

I work for a mortgage startup and we will be breaking away from our incubator in mid April. We want to implement an Intune/Autopilot solution to provision laptops to all new hire users once we are on our own. The strategy is to have a 3rd party vendor ship the hardware to the new hire, the new hire then turns it on and configures their internet, then the Intune/Autopilot process kicks off and starts it's process of provisioning and installing all the apps.

My questions are these: 1) will Autopilot install any app we want? Will it install 32 and 64 bit apps? Does it cover app update pushes and windows update pushes? 4) What else would I need to run with Intune/Autopilot to accomplish my outcome (WSUS, SCCM etc.)?

Please ask me any questions to clarify any missing information.

I'm looking for a complete solution. Any resources links and all help is greatly appreciated!

  1. Yes, you can package the apps up in Intune and track them during the ESP https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/enrollment/windows-enrollment-status#block-access-to-a-device-until-a-specific-application-is-installed

  2. Yes, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/apps/apps-win32-app-management

  3. You would need to update the apps in Intune for a later version to be pushed out. With Windows Updates you configure Windows Update for Business https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/protect/windows-update-for-business-configure

  4. It depends on what you need. You could use Co-management to have workloads managed by Intune or ConfigMgr, but it depends on what you require.

@GlenClement-6007 Thanks for posting in our Q&A.

For these requirements, I agree with Nick. I'll just add some information about windows update.

For question3's windows update, we can install windows updates via uploading App package file to intune. We can refer to the following link.
https://oofhours.com/2019/10/29/installing-windows-updates-during-a-windows-autopilot-deployment/
Note: Non-Microsoft link, just for the reference.

Hope the above information will help.

@NickHogarth-MVP @LuDaiMSFT-0289 Thank you both for your responses. Much appreciated!

I'm looking for coaching to help me get set up as fast as possible. Would you be willing to coach/mentor me in getting this solution set up so I can start testing? Is there a step by step guide to get me from just beginning to starting my first test provision?

If I were you, I would start off with the Steve and Adam Intune show on Youtube. They have great tutorials on Autopilot and Intune. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfmMlhX5TW8cicxHw6ExYVA

Ah!! Yeah, I found those guys. Ok. Now what about Endpoint Manager? They don't seem to talk about it. I know it's new as of last year.

Endpoint Manager is the new name that combines Intune, ConfigMgr (SCCM) and Autopilot etc. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/endpoint-manager-overview

Cool. So you are saying that if I read the docs and train with Steve and Adam, they will teach me everything I need to know to get to my first provisioning test?

Thanks and have a nice day.
