Creation of shared mailbox failed (AAD Graph doesn't return correct format for Values member.)

Hello,

Am getting the following error message when attempting to create a shared mailbox for "sales@mycompany.xyz":

Creation of shared mailbox failed

error
An Azure Active Directory call was made to keep object in sync between Azure Active Directory and Exchange Online. However, it failed. Detailed error message: AAD Graph doesn't return correct format for Values member. The AAD Graph error string is: [{"Item":"PropertyName","Value":"proxyAddresses"},{"Item":"PropertyErrorCode","Value":"ObjectConflict"},{"Item":"ConflictingObjects","Value":"Contact_efaae3d7-xxxxxxxxxxf"}] RequestId : f9354866-xxxxxxxxxxf The issue may be transient and please retry a couple of minutes later. If issue persists, please see exception members for more information.

As far as I can tell, sales@mycompany.xyz has not been used within Microsoft 365 and should be free, in particular no existing users or groups use this email address. I tried a few times yesterday and today, so many minutes apart, and also in powershell, all attempts return the same error message. Furthermore, just fyi, was able to create a different shared mailbox earlier without any issues.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards!

Just to be on the safe side, run Get-Recipient sales@mycompany.xyz. This is the fastest way to check whether a conflicting object exists.

Hello,

am getting

Get-Recipient: The operation couldn't be performed because object ... (the actual email) ... couldn't be found on 'DMxxxxxx.NAMPRxxxxx.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM'

(command works for existing users and for the existing shared mailbox that I was able to create)
Cheers.

So,

With powershell Get-Contact I found that there is a contact that seems to have this email attached and causing the issue. It's not a mail contact and I would be happy to remove this contact, but I don't know how.

Any thoughts, please?

Not sure what you are seeing, Get-Contact should only return mail contacts, and you should be able to remove them via Remove-MailContact. Unless you are using some similarly named cmdlet from other module.
You can check whether you see this entry in the EAC and/or the M365 admin center and delete it from there.

@Kat-1329

I would suggest you try to check and delete this Contact from GUI, you could find Contacts from those two places:

Contacts in Microsoft 365 admin center

Contacts in Exchange online admin center

Hello,

Thank you for your input. Cannot find the contact anywhere else, other than in powershell and in there only with Get-Contact. In fact, both the GUI contact sections, cf. your links, are empty in our case.

I found discussions and articles titled "Orphaned Exchange Online External Contacts" and similar, which suggest to use 'get-msolcontact' command to identify the contact object. Is that something to explore, perhaps?

Kind regards.
