Microphone is not working

Hello

I have a Problem with the Microphone in Teams on Linux:

  • Teams is complaining, that the microphone is not working.

  • In the device configuration I can select multiple microphones.

  • Teams shows no level for any microphone.

  • In the Pulse Audio Volume Control I can see level for all microphones.

  • I also see the Recording Channel of Teams (with label "Skype" :-) ) and it receives level.

Video is working fine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Greetings,
Anton Hattendorf

I can confirm the problem for 1.3.00.5153 (64-bit) with a Logitech, Inc. Webcam B500

  • in the audio settings the microphone is detected as "Webcam B500 Analog Mono"

  • audio works in other applications but is silent in Teams

  • when starting the Teams with sudo it works

A fix would be great!

I also have been experiencing problems with my laptop integrated microphone and an external USB microphone, I am unable to use the microphone in Teams for Linux, however, for other applications the microphone works fine. I also I tried running Teams as sudo, but it didn't work for me. However, when trying the test call (in settings -> devices) the microphone seems to work fine, the problem seems to only occurs in calls or meetings, which is a bit strange.

I fixed the problem as follows:

A problem seems to be in how Teams enumerates the input devices, confusing the list of devices with the list of enabled devices.
I have multiple input devices, web cam and headset.
I disabled the web cam input device because I do not want it to be used, I had no mic input in-spite of it being selected in Teams device settings.

To fix I enabled all my input devices again, and then in device settings selected the correct input device.

The problem does not exist with output devices so you need not worry about them.

Hey WilliamBell-8449 - can you explain what you mean by "disable" and "enable" input devices - as far as I can see all my devices are enabled, but microphone input still doesn't work with Teams.

Replying to myself. Found the "enable disable" functionality in Pulse Audio Volume Control - disabling stuff correctly removes that stuff from the Teams device selections - but the microphone still doesn't work correctly.

Config your mic and speakers in Device Settings panel and CLOSE IT

Do not keep the device configuration panel open for more than 1 minute, why? i don't know but it works for me

This is the right workaround at least in Ubuntu 18.04. Even better, don't open the Teams device configuration and everything will be OK. If you need change any, open the Linux audio config panel to change settings.

Hm, I also realize that most of the times I have the issue, the configuration panel is open. That might be it. I will try next time

I have posted a detailed question that looks more like a bug report, in case we can get Microsoft's attention in fixing it. Please have a look here and upvote:

the solution of @RobertoCarrascoRetamal-4144 is also working for me. For some reason if I open the device configuration on a call the microphone eventually stops working.

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 and a bluetooth Samsung Level Active. I was getting sound but no mic and really only using teams for the mic (I didn't go so far as to record a test track myself) The only audio device listed in the Teams Device Settings was "Builtin Audio Device". The System Settings | Sound applet detected my bluetooth device and somewhat worked in that I could see the VU meter respond with the mic, but quite low (still some response is better than none) and I could hear through the sound test it provides.

@HervSylvain-0658 had the right answer for me in this post https://docs.microsoft.com/answers/comments/23649 so I added myself to the 'pulse' and 'video' groups; bang-on:

sudo usermod -a -G pulse,audio weiset

I have a limilar issues, but with both the microphone AND speaker.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 and team 1.3.0.5153
I have a USB headset (Plantronics C420-M) for audio call.
I'm also using a Bluetooth headphone (mPow) to listen to music while not in call.

One thing I noticed was Team ignoring the device setting and using the System audio setting.

I would set the audio in team to my USB headset, the sound would play on my Bluetooth headseat.
I would change the audio in Linux, then team would play there.

Same with the microphone. Even though It was set to my USB headset, people would complain not hearing me or barely, because the system setting was set to the laptop built-in microphone, or my docking station audio input.

And adding or removing device (bluetooth disconnecting, etc) would mess up team. I would need to go back into the system setting and set the device back to the proper selection.

And manually change device there from and to bluetooth before going or leaving a meeting.

Even the test call selection is based on the system setting and not what device you selected in Team.

I Dunno if it's different on other Distro / version, but in short, the device setting in team seem not to be ignored completely.

Just switched from Ubuntu 16.04 to Mint 19.3 - this all worked perfectly in ubuntu 16.04, but now exhibits this exact problem in the new OS.

I daren't move! There was a Pulse update for mint 19.3 today - since then Teams sound has been working - but I haven't opened the system sound settings, nor the Teams device settings - I'm too scared!

Anyone else seen this suddenly working?

I'm still running into this issue and I have the most recent version of PA

I went back to the Teams wrapper - the sound was fine (I still haven't looked at the sound settings!) but Teams was constantly at 56% CPU and was dragging a kernel worker thread (kac?) with it adding another 20% - unsustainable.

Finally "pavucontrol" and selecting the right profile there did the trick for me. I had to select "analog stereo duplex" which was not the default. Funny that skype worked anyway.

Thank you @JensHektor-1180! I had the same issue but switching the device mode in pavucontrol to one of the "Duplex" options (instead of Mono Input + Mono Output) solved it for me!

I had the same issue on Xubuntu 18.04 with Teams 1.3.00.25560. The solution on my system was EXTREMELY simple, yet VERY hard to find (I wasted 1:30 h):
Situation: ALL sound devices are connected correctly and work perfectly with other video conference software. ALL settings in the sound settings window are correct (at first glance). Nevertheless, the microphone was dead during the test call.
Solution: As soon as a call is started, a new section appears in the "Recording" tab in the sound settings. Next to the drop down box (where my microphone is selected correctly!!) there is a small speaker symbol: The point is: If this symbol is dark grey, this input channel is MUTED. Click on the symbol unmutes the microphone and takes the symbol back to "normal" grey (you can hardly see the difference!!). Note that the microphone had been already unmuted in ALL the other settings – except this one!
Now everything works perfectly fine. (After just 90 minutes of wasted time.) → So be aware of this hidden' muting 'feature' ;-)

Unmuted (as it should be):

Muted (as it was by default):
