Error while using wbadmin enable backup in Windows 10 2004 and higher

Hello everyboby,

I want to use feature "wbadmin enable backup" to create automatic backups. If I run this command "wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:e: -allcritical -schedule:07:00" for instance. The command terminats without any comment. In Windows 10 versions before 2004 runs it without any errors and it's possible to create a backup task.
I tried this on various machins, ie: PC, Surface Pro 2 and 7, Hyper-V with clean installation and so on. All time the same error.
Has anyboy a solution for me?

Many thanks in advance

Hi,

Please try to run the command in Powershell, check if the command could work in Powershell with admin account.

Thanks for your time!

Anne

Hi Anne,

thank you, but the command terminats with the same result. I tried this with powershell 5 and 7 and cmd with admin account.
I found little bit deeper in the logs an access violation (memory) caused by wbadmin.exe on all machines.

Hi Anne,

I think that's not a specific hardware problem.

Did you try it on your system with installed Windows 10 20H2?
I got this behavior on any system that I used for it, Surface Pro 2 (4GB Ram, i5, 128GB SSD - fresh install and all updates incl. March and optional), Surface Pro 7 (8GB, i5, 256GB SSD, Windows in place upgrade from 1909 to 20H2, same patch level), Hyper-V VM and so on.

All systems have the same error. If I use Windows 1909 then is all fine.
I test it with a various range of hardware and patch levels. No success.

Hi,

On the Windows 20H2 system, please check if we installed KB4601319 and KB4601050, if yes, please try to uninstall the updates and check if it could work. And please feedback if the issue is related to the updates.

Best Regards,
Anne

Hi,

I got the same result. I did an addional test with this version 19042.631.201119-0144.20h2_release_svc_refresh_CLIENTENTERPRISEEVAL_OEMRET_x64FRE_en-us.
First with out any updates, full patches and without KB4601319 and KB4601050. In all cases the command has crashed during this step (see picture). 78815-wbadmin.png

Then, I would suggest you open a case with MS for deep troubleshooting.

Below is the phone number to open a case with MS:
