Azure Internet Speed slow on N Series

Hello guys, I just rented a Azure NV6 machine and try to download like really big things. But the network speed is on every application really bad. It just spikes to 200mbs per second and then goes to null for like 5 seconds. Then sometimes it goes back up again but mostly I have to restart the download (100gb). What do I do?

Hello, Lukas!

I created an NV6 VM and tried the 1 GB download test using www.thinkbroadband.com/download. I was able to complete the download without any interruption.

Edit: After further investigation, large downloads can compete with the OS for IO throughput on VMs. If you are running into issues with larger downloads/transfers, look at your storage configuration and be aware of which drive you are writing to (as VMs have both persistent and temporary storage).

  • Are you using multiple applications to try and download from the same source? (Could it be an issue with the source of your download?)

  • Is this something that only happens at peak hours? (Could it be an issue with your ISP?)

  • Are you able to segment the download into smaller chunks?

Ingress is not metered or limited directly. However, there are other factors, such as CPU and storage limits, which can impact a virtual machine’s ability to process incoming data.

Accelerated networking is a feature designed to improve network performance, including latency, throughput, and CPU utilization. While accelerated networking can improve a virtual machine’s throughput, it can do so only up to the virtual machine’s allocated bandwidth. To learn more about Accelerated networking, see Accelerated networking for Windows or Linux virtual machines.

Okay I think I found the issue. It was because of the slow HDD speed. I am just downloading to the temporary storage now all the time and just move it then to the hdd.
