Unspecified error 0x80004005 - Consistancy check on imported Hyper-V VM.

Hi, need some help with a problem regarding running consistency check and backing up an exported/imported Hyper-V VM.

Environment:
DPM 2019 10.19.379.0 backing up VM´s on S2D 2019 Hyper-V cluster.

Due to a problem with lingering ahvdx files on one VM, the problem VM was exported and imported. It was imported in to Hyper-V with "Copy the virtual machine (create a new unique ID), the original VM was deleted from Failover cluster and Hyper-V.

After this DPM will not backup the VM or run consistency check. From the log MSDPMCurr.errlog I can see that it´s using the old VM ID not the VM ID that the imported VM actually have now.

I have tried to uncheck backup integration service on the VM in failover cluster manager and started consistency check from DPM, checked backup integration on the VM again, started consistency check from DPM once more, removed the problem VM from protection group, pressed Refresh button when cluster is marked when adding to protection group again.

Is there any magic trick how to be able to backup on a VM that is imported in to Hyper-v that have previously been backed up with DPM?

I can also add that I previously have tried to import an exported VM with "Restore the virtual machine (use existing unique ID)" and had the same problem with that VM and DPM. In that case I ended up taking backup from Hyper-V replica server but that is not an option in this case.

Hi,

Thanks for your post, this is Anne from Windows Hyper V team, according to your description, I understand the issue is due to that we create a new unique ID when importing the VM, while the DPM uses the old ID to start consistency check and backup.

Since I'm not familiar with DPM, I would like to know if we have to use the original name or ID for the VM in DPM?

If not, as a workaround, we may use the VHD of the VM to create a new VM with a different name, so that it can work as a new VM that managed by the DPM. This method won't change the content within the VM, we just recreate the configuration file of the VM.

Thanks for your time!
Best Regards,
Anne

Hi Anne, and thanks for your reply.

It looks like I have managed to fix/workaround the issue. What I did to get it working was, when adding the VM with new ID back into the DPM protection group I expanded the Hyper-v cluster object and selected/marked the VM and pressed refresh button, at the same time I looked in the MSDPMCurr.errlog and there I could see the correct ID of the VM. After this the backup started working.

So for me it did not work when I pressed refresh when the Hyper-v cluster object itself was selected, like it did not really refresh what needed to be refreshed from Hyper-v.
