Global VNet Peering with Expressroute for DR

Hi,

I am trying to establish whether or not we need to enable global VNet peering between two Hub networks in 2 separate Azure regions when designing a DR solution for Expressroute.

The design pattern we are following is straightforward enough and is documented here :
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/expressroute/designing-for-disaster-recovery-with-expressroute-privatepeering#large-distributed-enterprise-network

As you can see in the above article the two Hubs (in different regions) are not shown as being peered. However, there is another article on Microsoft Docs which does show 2 Hubs in 2 separate regions where the Hub networks are peered using Global VNet peering :
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/expressroute/cross-network-connectivity

Which is the preferred approach here ?

Are there any disadvantages to enabling Global VNet peering in the above scenario (apart from the ingress/egress costs) ?

Regards,

Paul Lynch

@PaulLynch-4322 Thank for reaching out to us on Microsoft Q&A.

The DR setup with ER would involve setting up two ER circuits and connecting them both to each hub network. The vnet peering is optional and helps them talk to each other but there is no disadvantage to having it except for the costs as you mentioned.

Hope this answers your question. Please let us know if you have any further questions/concerns and we will be glad to assist you. Thank you!
