Windows Server 2016 not updating

Hi,

I'm running Windows Server 2016 Standard Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.4169)

Updates have not been coming in for about 2 months.

I saw several posts that said to first install the Servicing Stack Update, then the latest Cumulative Update.

I went to Microsoft Update Catalog and downloaded:
2021-02 Servicing Stack Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB5001078)
Support page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5001078-servicing-stack-update-for-windows-10-version-1607-february-12-2021-3e19bfd1-7711-48a8-978b-ce3620ec6362

But when I run it, it says:
"The update is not applicable to your computer"

That does not compute.

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

The SSU is not always replaced monthly. So it may have been installed previously. Try installing the latest cumulative update.

Thanks, but...

  • I've seen several posts that say install the SSU first, then the cumulative update.

  • If this SSU were installed previously, it would say so.
For example, if I try to install the SSU from 2020-09, it says "Security Update for Windows (KB4565912) is already installed on this computer"

  • But this SSU says, "Not applicable to your computer".
And that does not seem to be correct.

What to do?

Well... that'll have to be done off hours, don't want to reset Winsock on an active application server...

Sounds good.

I'm getting "Access denied" on Step 4, from an elevated command prompt:
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DataStore.bak

Also, the link to the Powershell script that is supposed to do this is broken.
Reset Windows Update Client settings script ->
which redirects to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/samples/browse/?redirectedfrom=TechNet-Gallery

Where is the script?

Administrators should have full control of %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution, something else may be broken. Try taking ownwership?

The TechNet Galley was retired so the scripts are also long gone unless the user might have migrated them.
