2.5 Inch Sata Boot issues

I have a Dell Latitute E6440 laptop and after upgrading Windows to 10 from 7 it now will not boot up. Through Diagnostics I am getting the usual error message that there is an issue with the hard drive. I have tried all the suggested booting types and non seem to work. I presumed that the HDD was finished and I ordered a new one. I checked the connections they all seem to be fine. What is puzzling me is that when I removed the HDD and plugged it into a USB cradle all the files showed up (on a different PC) fine...so is the HDD broken or not?? It is not making any strange noises etc

Hi,
You could try to boot to the Command Prompt (select it from the same Advanced boot menu you use for Safe Mode) and try chkdsk from there.
From the prompt type in chkdsk /f . That will check the file structure and fix problems with it and shouldn't take more than a few minutes.
If that runs to completion you can try chkdsk /r . That will go through the hard drive sector by sector and check for bad spots, fixing things where it can.
Also, deploy Latitude E6440 Windows 10 Driver Pack

Thanks for the suggestion and when I tried this I got the following message: Cannot lock current drive
Windows cannot run disk check on this volume because it is write protected

Depending on the reason why you receive "Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected",
check here

So after 4 hours of disc scanning and recovering it tells me after 2 mins (and 2%) recovered that I have to $70 to get the rest. A total con and waste of time. Wish you had told me that before I started!!

What's likely missing is the chipset and or disk controller driver.

A clean install will likely solve this problem.
