Cannot install Windows Update KB5000802 (Win. 10, build 19042.844)

Hi,

I am currently unable to install the latest cumulative update for March (KB5000802). I have tried multiple times to install it, and it always fails to update after restarting twice. I have attempted to run the troubleshooter, but it was unable to fix the problems; I have also attempted stopping the update service and refreshing the software distribution folder, as well as downloading the update as an .msu and running as a standalone.

I am aware that I could install the update as a .cab file, but I would rather avoid that if at all possible. Is there any other solution that might fix my problem?

I can provide hardware specs if necessary.

Hi,

The only way that i had to stop it from install was downloadinf this microsoft app:
https://www.tenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/24527d1436971294-hide-show-windows-updates-windows-10-a-wushowhide.zip
and hide it from install!!

Stopping the service is not a good way!!!

We had problems after installing KB5000802. Microsoft has stopped shipping out this update.
So the best practice for you will be: Stop the windows update service, clean C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and start the windows update service again. After you check for updates, the update won't be shown anymore (if yes, do you have a wsus in place and haven't pulled back the KB?).

I did all that you described, I stopped the Windows Update Service, then I deleted all files off of Windows SoftwareDistribution and cleaned from recycle, and then I started the Windows Update Service again, yet it still showed up and it still won’t update it. Did I miss something?

same for me.

I have the same problem.

This worked, thank you! I did have the update pending install, but once I went through with the install and it failed, and after I performed the fixes, the update was not detected.

I have the exact same problem you have but I'm nowhere near that versed in computers. How do I stop the Windows Update service and restart it? From the Task Manager itself? And by clean that folder you mean "delete everything inside", right?

I am annoyed that it keeps trying to install even after failing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To clear the SoftwareDistribution folder, as well as stopping and starting the update service:

Open up the command line with admin privileges, then type the following:
net stop wuauserv

Ensure that the service has stopped. Then open up C:\\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and delete all the contents.

Finally, go back to the command line, and type the following:
net start wuauserv

This is starting to concern me, because nothing is a fix for me. I have tried every solution I come across and it still won't stop downloading the update when I check and then it gets stuck at 20%. After I try to restart the computer or get out of it (after hours of letting it try to install) my computer gets stuck on "windows is updating, please don't restart your computer" and it just stays there.

Please help, this is a new PC and I'm getting concerned for the security.

Exactly the same for me as Michael Taylor.

Does not work for me. It still tries to download it over and over again. I did everything suggested here.

Hi,

A known issue was found in KB5000802 which will cause BSOD. Microsoft are presently investigating and will provide an update when more information is available.

Please see,

Hi Alice,

I am not seeing a crash with this update, because I can't even install it.

What happens is, the install process will go to 7% after a restart is performed, then another restart happens. Then the text 'We couldn't install your updates" is displayed on the blue screen, and another restart occurs. After that, the update is aborted, and files are cleaned up.

I should also note that I don't think there is a problem with the update service itself; I had both the Jan. and March updates pending, and when I tried to install both, both failed, but when I tried to install the Jan. update alone, it worked fine.

Is it possible that the crash issue is related to this?

I finally got this issue fixed. I did a Windows 10 update in place. This had one small challenge. Windows 10 v20h2 has a small glitch which prevents repair in place and needed a simple fix.

The instructions used were: https://www.windowslatest.com/2020/11/15/windows-10-in-place-upgrade-bug-means-you-can-longer-keep-your-files/

Hi everyone,

The blue screen issue has been solved in KB5001567. I don't think we should or need to install KB5000802.

If KB5000802 keeps jumping out to be installed, perhaps we have to hide it by using wushowhide.diagcab.

If it's OK to get it from third party website, please see, Downloading wushowhide.

Have the same problem, basically just ignoring the failed update for now with the hope that Windows rolls out a working cumulative update as promised. I too would rather not spend a day resetting Windows and then resetting all my preferences and app settings.

Nothing worked here, Can't even install the update manually, it fails. Seriously, Windows 10 is getting worse and worse. This problem has been here for weeks and still no fix, this is a work computer I don't have time to re-install everything, this is ridiculous.

Im still waiting. I agree with DeadStack. We are the few people who take the time to report these things. Please give us a solution. My main system is currently stuck on this update. Already had a bad boot cycle that almost led me to a reinstall. Dont have time for this.

What's happening with this? I've been seeing these update failures for a long time now. My computer even just looked like I got a Windows update when it booted up, but I'm still on Windows 10, and Windows update still shows multiple failures. I'm not interested in running a command prompt or deleting files. I just want Windows Update to damn install the update.

Hey there, this was very frustrating for me also...ultimately it's the build I think. I reset my PC (after back up) back to factory settings and all of the updates went through no problem. I'm not a tech guy but this was pretty easy and made me feel way better. Hope that helps.

I have tried everything said here and it doesn't matter. The update tries to install no matter what, whether I start or stop the WSUS or not. I have stopped it, cleaned up the software distribution files, restarted and then restarted my computer. When I go back to the updates it' automatically tries to install it anyway. I'm concerned as this is a new PC and I want to make sure everything is updated for security. Please can someone help me?

I have been checking many forums and reading as much as I can. Apparently this is a bad update and we aren't supposed to install it. I really hope it's figured out soon, I don't like leaving my computer not updated. Scurs me lol
