Cannot install Windows Update KB5000802 (Win. 10, build 19042.844)

Hi,

I am currently unable to install the latest cumulative update for March (KB5000802). I have tried multiple times to install it, and it always fails to update after restarting twice. I have attempted to run the troubleshooter, but it was unable to fix the problems; I have also attempted stopping the update service and refreshing the software distribution folder, as well as downloading the update as an .msu and running as a standalone.

I am aware that I could install the update as a .cab file, but I would rather avoid that if at all possible. Is there any other solution that might fix my problem?

I can provide hardware specs if necessary.

Hi,

The only way that i had to stop it from install was downloadinf this microsoft app:
https://www.tenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/24527d1436971294-hide-show-windows-updates-windows-10-a-wushowhide.zip
and hide it from install!!

Stopping the service is not a good way!!!

We had problems after installing KB5000802. Microsoft has stopped shipping out this update.
So the best practice for you will be: Stop the windows update service, clean C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and start the windows update service again. After you check for updates, the update won't be shown anymore (if yes, do you have a wsus in place and haven't pulled back the KB?).

I did all that you described, I stopped the Windows Update Service, then I deleted all files off of Windows SoftwareDistribution and cleaned from recycle, and then I started the Windows Update Service again, yet it still showed up and it still won’t update it. Did I miss something?

same for me.

I have the same problem.

This worked, thank you! I did have the update pending install, but once I went through with the install and it failed, and after I performed the fixes, the update was not detected.

I have the exact same problem you have but I'm nowhere near that versed in computers. How do I stop the Windows Update service and restart it? From the Task Manager itself? And by clean that folder you mean "delete everything inside", right?

I am annoyed that it keeps trying to install even after failing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To clear the SoftwareDistribution folder, as well as stopping and starting the update service:

Open up the command line with admin privileges, then type the following:
net stop wuauserv

Ensure that the service has stopped. Then open up C:\\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and delete all the contents.

Finally, go back to the command line, and type the following:
net start wuauserv

This is starting to concern me, because nothing is a fix for me. I have tried every solution I come across and it still won't stop downloading the update when I check and then it gets stuck at 20%. After I try to restart the computer or get out of it (after hours of letting it try to install) my computer gets stuck on "windows is updating, please don't restart your computer" and it just stays there.

Please help, this is a new PC and I'm getting concerned for the security.

Exactly the same for me as Michael Taylor.

Does not work for me. It still tries to download it over and over again. I did everything suggested here.

Hi,

A known issue was found in KB5000802 which will cause BSOD. Microsoft are presently investigating and will provide an update when more information is available.

Please see,
March 9, 2021—KB5000802 (OS Builds 19041.867 and 19042.867)
Windows 10 KB5000802 (March) update is crashing PCs with BSOD

Hi Alice,

I am not seeing a crash with this update, because I can't even install it.

What happens is, the install process will go to 7% after a restart is performed, then another restart happens. Then the text 'We couldn't install your updates" is displayed on the blue screen, and another restart occurs. After that, the update is aborted, and files are cleaned up.

I should also note that I don't think there is a problem with the update service itself; I had both the Jan. and March updates pending, and when I tried to install both, both failed, but when I tried to install the Jan. update alone, it worked fine.

Is it possible that the crash issue is related to this?

I have the same problem. First the update installs, then it prompts me to restart the computer and then it just reboots at 7% completion. After this the system does a rollback and just undoes all changes.

What I already did:
- Checked the remaining storage capacity of the HDD: OK
- Checked the device manager: OK, drivers up-to-date (as far as I can see)
- Tried a "clean boot": same problem
- Used sfc / scannow: no errors
- Used DISM: no errors
- Used the Windows update troubleshooter: no errors
- Manually cleared the update cache (renamed the UpdateRepository and catroot2): same problem
- Manually downloaded KB5000802 from the MS Update Catalog and installed it: same problem
- Checked ReportingEvents.log: Installation failed with error 0x80070003
- Checked CBS.log: Found several entries with error 0x80070003 (FILE_NOT_FOUND, PATH_NOT_FOUND), especially where it tried to extract files from the update cabinet.
- Checked setupapi.dev.log: It seems that the system always tries to update an old driver for a device (a Qualcomm Atheros WiFi adapter) that I do not have, at least not a compatible version. My WiFi adapter uses a different driver. The associated old inf-file (netathrx.inf) doesn't even exist in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. But I don't know if this has anything to do with the rollback.

I am using a HP PAvillion 500-211eg with an additional GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card but not additional hardware changes to the system.
I am using the 20H2 version of Windows 10 (build: 19042.804), it was installed in February of this year (on a formatted, empty and testet HDD)
I do not use a 3rd party anti-virus software, only the one from MS.

Btw.: The problem only happens with KB5000802. All other updates could be installed during the last days.
Edit: It seems KB1601382 (this update raises the build number to19042.844) also fails at 7%. It's the same error and the same log entries.

Hi, @SalvadorPrez-6953

Way to stop and restart Windows Update service
1. Press Windows + R key
2. Type services.msc and press Enter
3. Find Windows Update and right click it.

The "SoftwareDistribution" folder is where automatic updates are temporarily stored. If the folder is deleted, they will get automatically downloaded after you restart Windows Update service. Please see, How to rename or delete Software Distribution folder in Windows 10. It's OK to delete everything inside.

We can hide KB5000802 to prevent it from reinstalling. How to temporarily prevent a Windows Update from reinstalling in Windows 10 But the troubleshooter is no longer available from Microsoft. If it's OK to get it from third party website, please see, Downloading wushowhide.

Im having the same issue - stopped the service and cleared the SoftwareDistribution folder. After reboot I tried the udpate again and it just downloaded the cab files and failed again. Not sure I feel comfortable with downloading wushoshide. If MS is working on this should we just wait for a fix?

Hi,

It's not a good time to install KB5000802 and I agree that we'd better wait for a fix.

We can go to Settings--Update & Security--Pause updates for 7 days or Advanced options--Pause updates to choose Pause until.

If Windows Update for Business or other management tools are used, it's better to turn off automatic updates temporarily.

I have tried everything said here and it doesn't matter. The update tries to install no matter what, whether I start or stop the WSUS or not. I have stopped it, cleaned up the software distribution files, restarted and then restarted my computer. When I go back to the updates it' automatically tries to install it anyway. I'm concerned as this is a new PC and I want to make sure everything is updated for security. Please can someone help me?

I have been checking many forums and reading as much as I can. Apparently this is a bad update and we aren't supposed to install it. I really hope it's figured out soon, I don't like leaving my computer not updated. Scurs me lol

What's happening with this? I've been seeing these update failures for a long time now. My computer even just looked like I got a Windows update when it booted up, but I'm still on Windows 10, and Windows update still shows multiple failures. I'm not interested in running a command prompt or deleting files. I just want Windows Update to damn install the update.

Hey there, this was very frustrating for me also...ultimately it's the build I think. I reset my PC (after back up) back to factory settings and all of the updates went through no problem. I'm not a tech guy but this was pretty easy and made me feel way better. Hope that helps.

Im still waiting. I agree with DeadStack. We are the few people who take the time to report these things. Please give us a solution. My main system is currently stuck on this update. Already had a bad boot cycle that almost led me to a reinstall. Dont have time for this.

Nothing worked here, Can't even install the update manually, it fails. Seriously, Windows 10 is getting worse and worse. This problem has been here for weeks and still no fix, this is a work computer I don't have time to re-install everything, this is ridiculous.

Have the same problem, basically just ignoring the failed update for now with the hope that Windows rolls out a working cumulative update as promised. I too would rather not spend a day resetting Windows and then resetting all my preferences and app settings.
