add-mppreference 800106ba error

Im trying to add exclusions locally for Defender using add-mppreference.
I am a local admin and I start the powershell command as administrator.
However, whenever I try and run add-mppreference it fails with error code 800106ba.
The error text shows nothing of any use to troubleshoot the problem.
We do have a group policy that assigns exclusions btw.
Any ideas?
Thanks
David Z

p.s. The setting 'Configure local administrator merge behavior for lists' has not been configured and therefore is enabled by default.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Q&A platform.

Is there any third party anti-virus software in this client? I would suggest you temporarily disable these third party software and then run the command in PowerShell to see if the error still existed.

Best Regards,
Sunny

There are no third party anti-virus programs - just Defender.
