Old search results based on content type missing after applying Sharepoint 2013 February 2021 CU

We have Sharepoint 2013 farm, which uses content search web parts to lift news articles. We have configured several result sources which query the search index based on content type id. This is customers test farm we're using to evaluate the feasibility of installing the CU.

After applying the Sharepoint Server 2013 February 2021 CU, none of the result sources can no longer find the news articles created prior to the CU installation, based on the content type. After installing the CU, we debugged the search by creating few new news articles and those new news articles shop up fine in the result source query test and are also lifted up by the web parts.

Both new and old news articles have the exact same content type id. Both new and old news articles appear in the search content source URL view so the search has indexed them.

Here are the troubleshooting steps we have taken thus far:

  1. Reset the search index and performed a full crawl

  2. Cleared distributed cache

  3. Cleared config cache on all web front ends, did a timer job service recycle and performed a full crawl

  4. Compared new and old news items using powershell and didn't find any such differences which we tought could cause this behaviour.

It really seems like somehow the result sources cannot find the articles created BEFORE installing the CU.

Has anyone ran into this problem before and found a solution or has any ideas of further troubleshooting steps we could take? We're running out of
ideas.

Hi @Tunkkari-9307,

To narrow down this issue, let's verify the followings.

  • Could you preview all old and new news articles in SEARCH RESULT PREVIEW if you click Test query in Query Builder?

  • Do you have any crawl rules? Could you find old news articles in Crawl Log(Successes)?

  • How about creating a new result source identical to the old one? Does it help?

  • Also try to create a new search center and integrate the result source with it to see if the issue still persists.

Hello @AllenXu-MSFT and thank you for your answer. I attempt to answer your follow-up questions below.

  • Could you preview all old and new news articles in SEARCH RESULT PREVIEW if you click Test query in Query Builder?

We cannot see the old news articles in the Search result preview, only the new ones.

  • Do you have any crawl rules? Could you find old news articles in Crawl Log(Successes)?

We do not have any crawl rules in place. However, in the Crawl log's URL view, we were able to find the old news articles as well so
the search seems to have indexed them. Old new articles just cannot be found by the result source query.

  • How about creating a new result source identical to the old one? Does it help?

We created a new result source identical to the old one, but the new result source behaved the same way. It could only find the new news articles we
had created after installing the CU.

  • Also try to create a new search center and integrate the result source with it to see if the issue still persists.

We haven't tried creating a new search center yet, but will try this one tomorrow. I will post the results here once we have them.

@Tunkkari-9307,

Much appreciated for your reply. I just applied SharePoint 2013 February 2021 CU to my end, but everything works normally there. You don't have any crawl rules and can find crawl logs, it seems this issue is nothing to do with Crawl. You mentioned that you cannot see the old news articles in the search result preview, firstly please return to the library and make sure again the content type of old and new news articles is identical. And try to use content type name instead of id with the filter ContentType=your content type name.
