Updating seattle.master for client

Hi,

I need to add a custom css to hide "Edit Links" from the settings page in SharePoint 2013.
I am planning to reference a custom css in Seattle.master
My question is

1) Do I need to take a copy of the master page? Or I can make the change to the file and if anything goes wrong can revert back to the older version?

There are plenty of sites that is why I am concerned

Thanks

Hi anonymous user ,

You could revert back to the older version in version history. The seattle.master is stored in the Master Page Gallery (in site settings-> Master pages and page layouts), by default the version is enabled in Versioning Settings in this library. So after you make some changes in Master pages and page layouts, it would create a new version.

If anything goes wrong, you could just restore it in vesion history.

So no need to take the backup of the master page then?

You don't need to take the backup. The original Seattle.master is stored in the version history.
