If have a word document on my iPad, can i access that word document on my Microsoft laptop?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question. I've a Microsoft Surface laptop and have to buy an iPad for school. If I take notes using word on my iPad, would I have direct access to it on my laptop ? Or would I have to awkwardly transfer files over
