Unable to remove remnants of migrated guests in hyper-v cluster

We're running a 2019 Hyper-V cluster. During a patch operation the host was not drained of all roles before paused and rebooted. This has resulted in a virtual machine that can't be migrated to the specific host again. The mentioned host gets an error at boot (when VMMS starts) because it tries to find a missing virtual machine. The virtual machine resides on another host in the cluster.

We've tried stopping VMMS and removing files in "%Programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines Cache" but the files keep re-appearing once VMMS starts up again.

Where else should we look for this ghost entry?

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

We did find another reference to this remnant in the file "%Programdata%\microsoft\windows\hyper-v\data.vmcx". What is this files specific funktion? There are references of other virtual machines and storages there.

Hi,

Please check if the configuration file still exists in the following place:

C:\ ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines

Thanks for your time!

Anne

Yes, we looked in that folder and there is nothing about that machine in there.

Hi,

It seems strange, since we are limited to check the detailed settings in your environment via forum, I would suggest you open a case with MS for deep troubleshooting, so that they may have more channels to access your machines for a detailed check.

Below is the link to open a case with MS:
