Data storage

My company is looking to start storing our files in Teams, within the channels. Where is the data stored, and is there any backup. Where does the file go if it get deleted?

Hello @JaclynLesko-2835

Teams works in partnership with SharePoint, OneNote, Exchange and more, so your Teams data is stored differently depending on the content type, as shown in the diagram below:

Talking about files specifically, your Teams files will be stored in SharePoint and your Teams chat files will be stored in OneDrive.

Where is Sharepoint stored, is it recommended to have a 3rd party backup or is the Sharepoint backup sufficient?

Hello @JaclynLesko-2835

Microsoft datacenters are geo-distributed and fault tolerant. SharePoint data is mirrored in at least two datacenters to mitigate the impact of a natural disaster or service-impacting outage, so you don't need to worry about contracting a 3rd party backup solution when working with SharePoint in Microsoft 365.

As Pedro said above, Teams file is stored in SharePoint and Teams chat file is stored in OneDrive for Business.

Teams deleted file in channel can be restored within 30 days. If you want to recover the deleted file in Teams channel, you could try to follow the tips as below:

1)Open the channel's Files tab and select Open in SharePoint at the top of the page.

2) In SharePoint, select Recycle bin on the left side of the page. This will show a list of all files deleted from every channel in the team.

3) Select the file (or files) you want to recover and then select Restore at the top of the page.
