Is it possible to change SQL and Windows Cluster Nodes IPs and hostnames

Hi,

We have two VM having Windows 2012 STD. Windows cluster & SQL cluster (SQL 2012 STD) Active-Passive is created. VM is migrated to another location using VMware replication & migration method. After migration IP & hostname will be changed.

As per my uderstanding SQL cluster & Windows cluster will not work after changing IP & Hostname. Because if
two public IP (node IP), two private IP, two actual hostname (nodes name) are changed then it will not allow cluster to function. Hence we need to do fresh installation of Windows, Windows cluster & SQL cluster and migrate the database using backup & restore instead of VM replication.

Please let me know your suggestion or opinion on this.

Regards,
Nikhil P Desai

Hi,

Thank you for your posting!

Based on your descriptions, I would like to firstly ask you some questions:

1) You current have a cluster which is added a sql role and the two VMs you have are in this cluster?

2) You decide to migrate one of your VM to another location, the another location is in the cluster? Your cluster is in one site or in multi-site?

If you want to move your VM to another location in a multi-site cluster, then I suppose you do not have to quit your migration. Although your IP address and host names will change, you can use several ways to let your clients connect to your VM again. You can follow the guidance below:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/failover-clustering/failover-clustering-networking-basics-and-fundamentals/ba-p/1706005

The solution is discussed after "The last thing I wanted to talk about is with stretch/multisite Failover Clusters." in the article.

Thank you for your support, look forward to discussing your issue in a deeper detail!

Best regards
Joann
