Trouble configuring SCCM SUP role for the first time . Does SCCM SUP role require WSUS to be installed locally on SCCM server also?

Hello SCCM experts. I am trying to configure the SUP role for the first time but having some trouble getting it to work and sync correctly. We have a different on-premise WSUS server as well. I am confused by the error message that mentions WSUS 3.0 SP2 or greater must be installed. It is installed on WSUS server, but not our SCCM Server. Does it need to be ?

Error 6600 WSUS Configuration Manager failed to configure upstream server settings on WSUS Server "SCCMservername.domain.edu". Possible cause: WSUS Server version 3.0 SP2 or above is not installed or cannot be contacted.
Solution: Verify that the WSUS Server version 3.0 SP2 or greater is installed. Verify that the IIS ports configured in the site are same as those configured on the WSUS IIS website.

Error 6703 WSUS Synchronization failed.
Message: WSUS update source not found on site AC1. Please refer to WCM.log for configuration error details..

Hi, @JustinVaughn-8951
Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.
The software update point site system role must be created on a server that has WSUS installed. The software update point interacts with the WSUS services to configure the software update settings and to request synchronization of software updates metadata.

And it is not supported to install the software update point site system role on a server that has been configured and used as a standalone WSUS server or using a software update point to directly manage WSUS clients. Existing WSUS servers are only supported as upstream synchronization sources for the active software update point.

For more details, please refer to the documentation:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/sum/get-started/install-a-software-update-point

Hi Allen, Thanks so much for the info. Am I correct to assume that if I install WSUS on our SCCM Server and configure the SUP role, then perhaps I can decommission our WSUS server entirely?

Hi,@JustinVaughn-8951
Yes, we also need to delete all WSUS related group policy settings because SCCM will configure the group policy automatically when we setup the SUP with new WSUS on SCCM server.
