IPV4 Network card error on restore VM

Hi I have a strange issue I cant seem to resolve

I have 3 VMs running on a server 2016 HyperV server
One is an SBS2011 ( ready to be turned off)
One is a Server 2012 r2 , this is a DC and data server
One is an Exchange 2013 on Sever 2012 R2

I do nightly backups of both the VMs and the physical drives all the VMs are running from using windows Server backup.
I have tried to restore the 3 servers to test our disaster recovery plan ( to an identical Dell R530 server we have spare) but have hit an issue
all 3 servers restore and all power up ok
both the exchange server and the SBS work fine BUT the Sever201r2 Data server shows its NIC as connection undertimined
If I go in to Network adapters is shows connected BUT when i look at details its blank
If I go in to properties of the NIC Client for Microsoft Networks is unticked, if I tick it i get the message "are you sure you want to disable this feature" when i click ok
there are no IPV4 or IPV6 showing as installed and if I try to install IPV4 i get the error " Could not add the request feature, the error is : Cannot create a file when that file already exists"

I have checked that the old NIC is not in device manager by running devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
if i run netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces it only shows the loopback interface
The other 2 VM's restored and run ok so I know its not the Hyperv Server itself

any ideas of what to try next

Thanks

Might try deleting / adding the network adapter in the virtual machine configuration.

Hi,

Thank you for your posting!

Based on your descriptions, firstly, I would like you to take screenshots about the condition of your problematic NIC, along with any related error codes or messages appear in your operations. So that I can have a more comprehensive picture about your issue.

Secondly, I suggest you to reset your TCP/IP protocol, you can use the methods in these articles:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-reset-tcp-ip-by-using-the-netshell-utility-d954430c-9b11-43f0-6081-0fc9235a8b4a#bkmk_letmefixitmyselfalways

https://techjourney.net/reinstall-and-reset-tcpip-internet-protocol-in-windows-with-netshell/

Please note: Information posted in the given link is hosted by a third party. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy and effectiveness of information.

After you reset your TCP/IP, to check whether ip address appears in the NIC properties.

If this action still cannot solve your issue, then try to create a new network adapter in the virtual machine configuration and connect it to its corresponding virtual switch.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards
Joann

I'd check here and with manufacturer about support for Server 2016
https://www.windowsservercatalog.com/

also check the manufacturer's site for the latest firmware, ROM bios, chipset and driver support packs.

Thanks Patrick but as I put in the original post I have 3 VMs running on this host and the other 2 are running with no errors. This would suggest to me its not an issue with the host server
2 of the VMs are both running Server 2012r2 one works fine the other has the issue above

Hi,

Thank you for your reply!

Based on your descriptions, I suppose you can try these methods to solve your issue:

1) Please make sure that you have already upgraded your VM configuration version to the latest one. Then try to see if properties can appear.

2) Check if your VM is installed some third-party softwares like VPN client, JumpStart WiFi, Symatntec EndPoint or Acronis Backup & Recovery, etc. You can use command: netcfg -v -s n to show all installed network services. If you have installed any of them, please uninstall them first, you can reinstall them after your properties appear in the Network Connection Details.

3) Reset DNS service with the following steps:
- Press the Windows key + R and type "services.msc" and press OK.
- Scroll down to find the DNS client.
- Right click on it and click Restart.

4) If still the issue persists, then I would suggest you to download the latest display driver from the computer manufacturer's website and install it in compatibility mode. You also may install the latest drivers for all the devices including BIOS and chipset drivers.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

After you install the latest display driver, you need to check if your DCOM is working fine:
-Hit Start -> Run and type in dcomcnfg
-Browse down to Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> DCOM Config -> netman
-Right-click on netman and choose Properties;
-Go to Security tab;
-Under Launch and activation Permissions select Customize and click Edit;
-Make sure there are LOCAL SERVICE and NETWORK SERVICE in the list, and that both users have the -below 2 permissions enabled (Allow boxes are checked):
Local Launch, Local Activation
-Hit OK to apply all the changes.

In addition, here is a public document that can be helpful for you. Many of my suggestions are also from this article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-wi-fi-connection-issues-in-windows-9424a1f7-6a3b-65a6-4d78-7f07eee84d2c (this article also supports 2012 R2)

Thank you for your time!

Best regards
Joan
