Consistent Unknown Queries Count

In an Azure Database for MySQL flexible server database I have set up, I'm looking at the Queries metric over the past 3 days at 15 minute intervals. At the beginning of this period, I see spikes in queries, corresponding to our initial accessing and testing of the database. Since then, the database has been left alone; we have not been actively querying the database. However, the metrics show a consistent rate of approximately 350 queries for every 15 minute interval. I am unable to attribute these queries to any action on our part.

Is this expected behavior? Is there a certain amount of 'default' querying that will be reported by the system? Does anyone have an idea as to where these queries may be coming from?

Thank you for any insight you can provide.

My apologies for the delay. Here is a screenshot of the Azure Monitoring Metrics showing the Queries for the past 7 days at 15 minute intervals.

We have checked with our internal team and found - There are some internal queries, like running “show global variables” every 30 seconds. It helps Azure to monitor the server status, including the customer-facing metric.

Team has conveyed that they will try to add all these queries in a public facing document. We currently don't have a ETA for this document.

Hope this helps.

Hi Navtej,

Thank you for looking into it and clarifying the source of the queries! I feel better knowing the traffic is legitimate. I agree that it would be useful to have that information added to the documentation at some point.

Much appreciated,
Jeremiah
