How do I configure DFS to use both NetBIOS and FQDN in referrals?

Hi

Is there a way to make the DFS server use Both NetBIOS and FQDN in referrals?

The problem I have is that my shared folders are much faster when using FQDN name but when using the NetBIOS name of server, then it is much slower to 10 minutes compared 16 seconds. When I looked at referrals it is using FQDN of DFS server.

Thanks

Hi,

We cannot configure DFS to use both NetBIOS and FQDN in referrals. We can only choose one of them.

In server 2016, it seems that FQDN is the default for DFSN. For mixed mode (FQDN and Non FQDN), if you set DFS to use NetBIOS then you might have some problems.

So, the recommend way is still using FQDN in referrals.

Candy

It would be nice for Microsoft to allow both NetBios and FQDN.

People would face issues if they migrate from 2008 to 2016/2019 and the slowness in my case was related to the name. As my old server 2008 was using Netbios name and all users were pointed to that and to be honest if you have multiple domains and different users from different countries, then it is hard for them to type the FQDN, most are going to computername. My issue is solved as I mentioned, I created a registry entry to make the new server use Netbios.
