How to disable the Office and Emoticon keys on a Microsoft keyboard

Hello everybody,

I have a new Microsoft ergonomic keyboard (typing is a breeze on it, well done!), and it has the new Office and Emoticon keys right to the AltGr key. All the way when I want to press AltGr (using 10 finger typing), it happens that I accidently press the Office key - which opens office.com in the browser for me and makes absolutely not the slightest sense. It hinders my work instead, because the browser, of course :-( steals the keyboard focus and my typing goes to the wrong window.

So: How can I just completely disable these two keys? Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center allows me to customize many keys, but not these two. I don't need any function on these keys and would like most just disabling them.

Thanks!

I, too, have been frustrated with these keys and could not find a hack or workaround online. After reading this thread, I decided to go old skool, grabbed a letter opener and popped those stupid keys (carefully) right off the board! Take that, Micro$oft! One downside tho - yucky dirty under where the keys were!!! LOL

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Q&A platform.

Based on my research, there is no built-in workaround to disable these 2 keys. And it seems that you may try some third party tools to achieve the goal.

You could refer to method in the following video:

Hello Sunny,

Thank you for your response! I'm unsure if I want to install software from unknown sources on my computer, but the tip is fine.

Can I somehow reach the hardware team and beg for an update for the Mouse and Keyboard center to allow re- or un-mapping those keys?

Best Regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

Thank you for your reply. If you do not want to install third party software, I think you could have a try to contact the hardware team.

Sunny

Yes - but how? Is there a mail alias such as hardware@microsoft.com?

Best Regards,
Stefan
