Configuration Manager Client installs software updates for Office Products which are not installed on system

Hello All,

We have observed that MECM Client is downloading and installing the security updates for Microsoft Office Project and Access applications on system though Access and Project is not installed on system. Ideally these updates should be not required for the systems.

March 2, 2021, update for Project 2016 (KB4493191)
March 2, 2021, update for Access 2016 (KB4493188)

UpdateStore.log files shows these updates as missing. However MS Project / Access in not at all installed on system.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Hi @KedarTamboli-6326

The principle of whether the update is required by the client: Windows update agent (windows update service) will contact WSUS (SUP) for scanning, and if is successful, a state message will be sent to site server confirming that, software update scan is completed successfully.

Therefore, could we check if these updates are shown as required by the client on SCCM console? if yes, maybe there might be some residual files about Access and Project are still saved in the client so that these updates are downloaded and installed in the client.

Yes Correct. So in that case how would know that what is actually patch is looking on system to make it as required? any WMI call, registry key....because I cannot find the application is installed in add/remove program....

There is the script that we could clarify the office component on the side of client:

Note: This is non-official Microsoft article just for your reference.
