Office 2019 ProPlus x64 SCCM Update Deployment - "Office will be updated in 30 minutes"

Hello -

I'm in need of a little assistance. Recently, I've began rolling out Microsoft Office 2019 x64 to 400+ PC's. Yesterday, I was notified that a few users from one of our test groups have begun receiving the attached message that states "Office Will update in 29 minutes." I review a number of articles, I've disabled the HideUpdateNotifcation by changing the value to 1, and set both the UpdatesReadyToApply and UpdatesBlockedTime values to 0. Although I no longer see the banner that used to be displayed within the Office applications, I have yet to figure out how to disable this latest update notification. I believe this message displays in the System Tray but will need to confirm with one of the end users that is receiving or has received this notification.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.88296-office-update-notification.png

According to your description, were these users working in an Office program, such as Microsoft Outlook, and hasn't closed it in several days?

Besides, I beg your understanding, I need to confirm again that did you set the update deadline for Office?
This screenshot looks like a countdown to the Office update, and the "hideupdatenotifications" you set does not apply to notifications associated with update deadlines.

Please locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\policies\microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate, check whether you set data value for "updatedeadline".

Hello Emily Hua-MSFT -

Thank you for reaching out. I just checked the PC in question and I do not see that key present. What would I set the key to to prevent this notification from appearing?

Kindest regards.

Thanks for your reply.
Generally, to hide update notifications, we edit the registry entries you said.

So far, have all users received this notification?
Have the users who received this notification continuous used any Office application for several days after you push the updates?

Updates can't be applied if the Office program that has to be updated is being used by the user.
If updates can't be applied for several days, Office will remind the users to close the Office program.

Emily Hua-MSFT, one additional question. Ideally, I would like to set the key once so that it's no longer an issue moving forward. Is this something that I will need to update monthly? I would like SCCM to handle the notifications for pending updates/reboots and not Office, if at all possible.

@OmarJohnson-8366
Normally, there is no need to update the registry settings about Office update on a monthly basis.

Hi emilyhua-msft -

Can you please elaborate a little more on your last comment. Also, based on your response below, what should the deadline value be set to to prevent the update notification from appearing?

Please locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\policies\microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate, check whether you set data value for "updatedeadline".

Kindest regards.

The reason why I mentioned the registry entry "updatedeadline" is your screenshort looks like the countdown for updatedeadline, and the "hideupdatenotifications" does not apply to notifications associated with update deadlines.
I want to check whether you set "updatedeadline" which may causes this issue.

But you did not set it, so I want to confirm whether the users did not close any Office program after downloading updates for several days, in this case, I think Office will eventually remind users to close Office programs.

I'm currently setting the following values in the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\common\officeupdate]
"hideupdatenotifications"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Updates]
"UpdatesReadyToApply"="0"
"UpdatesBlockedTime"="0"

Ideally, I would like to suppress any update notifications, both within Office applications or when the deadline has expired, and allow WSUS to handle the end user notifications. Are you aware of any additional settings and/or reg keys that I could leverage?

Kindest regards.

Hy @OmarJohnson-8366 ,

"The Hide update notifications Group Policy setting doesn't hide notifications related to deadlines."

Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/end-user-update-notifications-microsoft-365-apps#notifications-your-users-see-when-you-set-an-update-deadline-for-microsoft-365-apps

If you need to apply a deadline policy, you can't hide the notifications.

Regards
