2 nodes Windows Server 2019 SOFS for profile management not sharing iops

Hello,

I created a cluster with 2 nodes (WS2019 DC) on VMware. I configured them with some hard drive (.vmdk) and created a S2D pool.

When I reach the share through SMB3, it seems like IOPS are not shared between nodes. I downloaded "watch-cluster.ps1" from VM Fleet (diskspd repository) and only one of my node is working.

Do you have any idea why this happen ?

Hi,

Thank you for your posting!

Based on your descriptions, I would like to check two things for you:

1) In view of "IOPS are not shared between nodes", you mean that the other node in your cluster just does not respond? I would like you to offer me more details about your issue, such as what exactly happened when your iops were not shared, and you can screenshot your iops performance and offer it for me.

2) In view of "only one of my node is working", does it mean that the other node in your cluster cannot respond? Or it just means that the other node is performing poorly. I would appreciate it if you could give me some more details about the situation.

Thank you for your understanding! The more details about the issue that you can offer me, the better I can help you to troubleshoot your issue.

Best regards
Joan

Hi,

Thank you for your reply,

1) When I launch watch-cluster.ps1, only 1 node display IOPS usage. Other node respond If I move ressources to it (and vice-versa) but SOFS should be active-active, when I check the documentation on microsoft.com there is a video where we can see that node shares ressources, which is not the case with my cluster...

2) it seems like the other node cannot respond any SMB request, only the node where the storage is mounted can respond.

I hope this is clear, let me know if you want more informations

Hi,

Thank you for your patience!

Based on your descriptions, I think we may need more tests and information before we can get a deeper insight of your issue.

1) Check if you have configured properly, including your hardware, your SMB connection, etc. Actually, I agree with your idea that the issue may be concerned with SMB connection. See if you have any problems with physical connections, with switch speed auto negotiation, DNS errors. Run ping from that machine to find details about how packets are sent and received. And here is an article that you can follow to troubleshoot your SMB:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/troubleshoot/troubleshooting-smb

2) You can also go to check the event logs on the node that is not working in your cluster, to see if there are any error codes or messages related to your issue. In addition, after you conduct the troubleshooting, such as sending a file to the node that you think is unresponsive via SMB3 and check whether there are any error messages or codes popping up. You can go to the location %SystemRoot%\System32\winevt on your node to check your event logs. You can also go to Event Viewer and Device Manager (i.e. netmask) for error messages or codes.

Thank you for your support!

Best regards
Joan

Hello,

I make few investigation: nothing is wrong with SMB, I can move role between server and the connection will follow pretty well.

I see that RSS and RDMA are not enable on the network card, it could be the issue ?

Hi,

Thank you for your patience!

After our research, we can summarize three tips for you to further troubleshoot this issue:

1) Since you have tested that your SMB transfer is working fine, so I can tell you that the value 0 should not affect your working environment. So, you can just ignore it.

2) Analyzing scripts actually is beyond our scope, so we are unable to give you further ideas on the scripts except for possible troubleshooting for any cluster issues you may encounter. And this troubleshooting I have posted above, you can check them at anytime you want.

3) If you really are worried about the value 0, then I will suggest you to contact Microsoft Customer Support and Services where more in-depth investigation can be done so that you would get a more satisfying explanation and solution to this issue. However, they do not offer scripts analysis as well. They will further troubleshoot possible issues you may encounter by collecting event logs and graphs from your Performance Monitor and Deskspd.

You may find phone number for your region accordingly from the link below:

Thank you for your understanding and support! Have a nice day! : )

Best regards
Joan
