Can't Remote Desktop to Win10 newly upgraded from Home to Pro

For years I've had a Lenovo Yoga laptop running Windows 10 Pro that I have been able to use Remote Desktop to from any other device - internal or external to my home network all worked fine.

About a year ago I bought an MSI laptop with Windows 10 Home that I had planned on using only for gaming, etc. I have recently decided to use the MSI machine exclusively and upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, however I am not able to get Remote Desktop to work and, when entering my user name and password, get an error stating "Your credentials did not work". I have tried variations of my username with and without the PC name before it (e.g. "pcname\user") and still get this error every time. I've tried connecting from multiple devices and all have the same issue.

Both the old Yoga and the MSI are set up with the same Microsoft account as the primary and only user. I can still remote desktop into the Yoga with these same credentials, so the password should be valid.

I've found dozens of articles online about changing group policy and registry settings - none have produced results and I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Hello Chris @ChrisDiller-1212

Do you mean you are replacing lenovo Yoga with MSI laptop AS the remote machine
And tried on different client PC with same credential returns the same error ?

According to this article, the error message is sometimes caused because the user you are trying to connect from does not exist on the Remote Desktop server.
This happens when you try to change your username or install a fresh copy of Windows.

Have you tried the solution suggested in that article as well?

Best Regards
Karlie

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I'm connecting from another device TO the Yoga (has worked great for 5+ years) or MSI (the one I've been struggling with).

I did find that page last week when searching for a solution, but reading through it again gave me an idea.

I had already toggled the Windows Hello setting without any luck, but I had the idea to remove my PIN from the login options all together. Did that, and now I am able to remote in to MSI.

I'll try reenabling Windows Hello sign-in options but this is huge progress. THANKS!
