RDP disconnection/reconnection. Printers get lost.

Hello.

One of our users access a Windows 2016 Standard Remote Desktop Server. He has 2 printers on his client PC. One is a USB printer. The other is a network printer on his LAN.

User indicates that he occasionally has to disconnect from the RDP session, for one reason or another. Then reconnect back. He avoids logging off completely due to applications that need to run continuously on his session. Understandably, when he reconnects to his session, sometimes there are oddities with the redirected printers not working correctly.

I've informed the user that this is normal behavior, but I do want to check to see if there is anything further that can be done from a best practices standpoint.

Any recommendations would be welcome.

Hi Rudy,

Following is a list of some more things that can be looked into in a "Printer Redirection not working" issue:

  1. If you connect over RD Gateway, ensure that the policy that disables printer redirection is turned off.

  2. If your server is also a domain controller, refer to Install Remote Desktop Session Host role service in Windows Server without Connection Broker role service.

  3. Group Policy must be correctly set to enable Easy Print on the Server. The policy location is "Computer Configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Printer Redirection". The setting "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first" must be set to "Enabled" for Easy Print redirection, and it has to be "Disabled" for Legacy Print. For "Not configured", Easy Print is chosen by default.

  4. Make sure that the Printers check box in the client (mstsc.exe) window on the Local Resources tab is checked. The corresponding setting in the associated RDP file is "redirectprinters:i:1".

In the meanwhile, please check the local computer and session host's Event Viewer via the below location path into the issues that occur during print.

Issue was not really resolved, but understandably so. It's not really an RDS issue. But got items to know, so set as Answered because it was helpful.
