MS ISCSI Issue

We have setup MS ISCSI so that we have an external VM on host02 that we can backup onto from host01.
The issue we are having is that if host02 becomes inaccessible host01 hangs - we can't access it.
Is there a way we can configure ISCSI so that this doesn't happen - e.g. host02 goes down and host01 continues to operate as always.

Thanks in advance for attention to this.

Hi,

Thank you for your posting!

Based on your descriptions, I may firstly need more detailed information about your environment:
1) What did you mean "an external VM"? Is this VM in your cluster or you mean this VM is connected with an external network?

2) How did you configure your VM? You use our Hyper-V or Vmware?

3) How many nodes (hosts) you have in your cluster? I guess it is a two node cluster using iSCSi?

4) "if host02 becomes inaccessible host01 hangs", does this situation refer to that your cluster is crashed? In other words, your host02 drops while because host01 hangs so host02 cannot failover to host01? If so, then how and where you configure your clustered disk? I may need more information before I can help you figure out some appropriate plans.

5) You need to identify whether you use active-active mode if you only have two nodes in your cluster. If so, you may have to pay more attention about the size of the file that needs backuping, since active-active mode occupies double space on your nodes.

Thank you for your understanding!

Best regards
Joan

Hey,

Depending on the goal you are trying to achieve, you can choose various configurations. With 2 hosts you can deploy a 2 node Failover Cluster using StarWind VSAN (either free or paid) as a shared storage. VSAN create replicated storage pool, while cluster will handle failover. Check the following guide for more information:
