What do Options > Text Editor > Advanced > Text formatting method selections mean?

The Visual Studio IDE documentation does not adequately describe all the Tools > Options... settings. In particular the documentation has paths to Reference > General user interface elements > Options > Text Editor > General. This is followed by Reference > General user interface elements > Options > Text Editor > File Extension. However, in the actual IDE, between General and File Extension, there is a dialog box for Advanced. In the Advanced dialog box, there is a dropdown ListBox called "Text formatting method" with three entries: Automatic, Ideal, and Display. I would like to know what each of those mean and how they affect the edited text.

Hi @NicholasPiazza-0093,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Based on my testing in VS2019 16.9.4, the option “Text formatting method” can adjust the formatting methods. From setting Display, Automatic to Ideal, it looks like that the text is more obvious and clearer.

By the way, I suggest you directly submit feedback to visualstudio-docs to perfect the document of the function.

Sincerely,
Anna
