Azure Sphere Configuration at Customer premises

Hello,

Azure sphere documentation discusses about procedures like claiming a device, retrieving certificates etc in a development environment where VS(code), Azure Sphere SDK etc is required to be setup. The configuration happens over CLI using commands.

Lets assume a scenario where a sphere device is shipped to a customer. The customer is not techno savvy and doesn't understand setup process and want to perform operations like claiming a device, reading certificate, wifi conf or device provisioning in a more simpler way. In that case, what are easier user friendly ways for end customer? Something like, a sphere device being configured (claimed, wifi settings etc) via a mobile app connected to device or any other means).

@NagvekarJeevanCognizant-7915 Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

That's a good feedback. Currently there is no other process for setting up the device such as through mobile app. You need to use the Azure CLI commands with a device connected through USB to the development machine.

As mentioned in quick start guide, Getting started with Azure Sphere involves several steps:

  • Installing the SDK and setting up for development

  • Claiming your device

  • Configuring networking for app development

  • Subscribing to notifications about Azure Sphere updates and services

For production scenarios, which don’t involve dev kits and SDKs.

  • Claiming- We would expect the device operator to claim the device, not the end user. For information about how to claim in bulk, please see here.

  • Wifi connection by end user- There are a few options for this. Please see here.

We will share your feedback with Azure Sphere team. Meanwhile, please let us know if you are stuck with any step for setting up the Azure Sphere device.
