SHIR - Registry path DataManagementGateway HostService is missing. Please re-install

The ADF self-hosted runtime is generating a message in the event log saying it needs to be re-installed:

Message is ...
Registry path SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DataTransfer\DataManagementGateway\HostService is missing. Please re-install the Integration Runtime (self-hosted) node)

Has anyone else encountered this? This was discovered by a support engineer when I opened an unrelated ticket. But the server had otherwise been running just fine until today.

Is it possible that the SHIR corrupted itself? Possibly as a result of an automated update?

Within just a few minutes of opening our (unrelated) support case, the Azure engineer asked us to reinstall the SHIR. I'm not completely opposed to that strategy but it seems fishy for this to be the standard response. The internal team that manages our SHIR VM's don't have the bandwidth to constantly reinstall services that are misbehaving.

I would appreciate any additional information about that "please re-install" message from the SHIR. Perhaps they sprinkle that all over the place in the hopes that this SHIR will be continually reinstalled and kept up-to-date. I believe there is a updater service as well, but I suppose even the updater service needs updating from time to time, and a scary message in the event log may encourage the ADF customers to users to do that.

Hi @DavidBeavon-2754,

Thanks for posting your query.
Could you please confirm if it happened on a single machine or multiple SHIR machines? Also how often have you noticed this error?
Also any recent maintenance on that SHIR machine, suspecting if any other process have corrupted the registry key or the %programdata%\Microsoft\DataTransfer\DataManagementGateway folder .

Also could you please check when was last SHIR auto update happened and compare the date time with the error date time, just to see if the auto update has any connection to this issue.

Thanks

@KranthiPakala-MSFT
I had not noticed any patterns yet, which is why I wanted to contact the community.

These servers are pretty isolated, and aren't used for anything other than the IR. If/when they have problems, I would tend to blame the service itself or the self-updating operations that it performs. I will try to do some more investigation, as you suggested, and see if I can find some patterns.

According to tech support my issues were transient.

We have analyzed the issue and it qualified to be a transient issue. There is no previous record of any similar incident recorded.

On your current issue we have suggested the workaround to Reinstall the SHIR component

Thanks. Reinstalling isn't the end of the world. But it seems a bit alarming to see a software package that tell its users to reinstall as a matter of course.
