New Edge cannot open

Hi,

For now, three users have this issue, they cannot open Edge, nothing happens when click the Edge icon. I don't see the Edge process in Task Manager.

They are using 20H2 OS, win10 Enterprise version, fresh install, not upgrade from 1909 or other version.

Edge version is the latest 90.0.818.46.

I haved checked the Edge app under App setting, no "Advanced Option", only "Modify" option, have tried it, however no luck.

Please assist.

I've now heard from the Edge team that this fault (originating in SmartScreen) has been corrected in Edge 90.0.818.49.

If you're able to open Edge after applying some sort of mitigation (e.g. disabling Crowdstrike, uninstalling KB50010330 or disabling the SmartScreen Reputation filter), click ⋯ (Settings and more) > Help and feedback > About... to update to the latest version. After doing so, revert the mitigation you applied earlier and check that Edge opens as expected.

If you're not able to open Edge, open Windows Security by clicking on the shield icon in the notification area. Select App & browser control and click on Reputation-based protection settings. Then turn SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge Off.It should now be possible to launch Edge; follow the steps under (1) to get everything back to normal.

Hi,

Thanks!

Today I test in one laptop, install KB5001330, and edge version is 90.0.818.49, the Edge browser can launch without issue. No need to turn off SmartScreen.

I haven't had this issue since the Chronium update but Edge refusing to start was a common problem.

The workaround that always worked for me was to do the following:

  1. Go to where Edge is installed on the disk (%userProfile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_*)

  2. Delete the contents

  3. Start a Powershell session as an administrator

  4. Run the PS command to reinstall
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | foreach { Add-Appxpackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose }

That should reinstall Edge and, in my experience, resolves the Edge issue. But again, I haven't seen this since the Chromium version came out.

Hi,
I remove the folder, AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe, run the powershell, however the Edge still cannot open.

And I see the Edge icon points to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe".

In case anyone finds this answer, I'd point out that it doesn't apply to Chromium Edge. The location and command only affect Legacy Edge, which is now history.

Hi @ShawLu-3171

I suggest that you can try to repair Edge using Repair options from the Control Panel in this article.

If repairing doesn't work. You can try to reset Edge:

  1. Open File Explorer.

  2. Copy and paste the following location into its address bar: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft. It will navigate to the C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft path.

  3. Delete the Edge folder.

  4. Open Edge and test again.

If the above steps still don't work for you, you can try the solutions to uninstall Edge using PowerShell and CMD in this article, then reinstall Edge to see if it can fix the issue.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, uninstall and reinstall the edge, still cannot open.

Finally, we uninstall the KB5001330 on the laptop (Dell 5420), then it works. Edge can open without issue.

Hope it helps others.

There have been several reports of faults like this recently. In several cases, it was found that interference from third-party software was to blame. In particular, systems using Crowdstrike were found to be affected. If you have any third-party security software running, that's the first thing to suspect.

Some users have found that the fault goes away if the SmartScreen filter is turned off. Click on the Windows Security shield in the notification area, select App & browser control, then Reputation-based protection settings. Turn SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge off. Now try and launch Edge again. Any joy?

If this works, please regard it as a temporary solution until a fix is found. This will happen more quickly the more users who submit feedback about it. In Edge, submit a bug report by pressing Alt-Shift-i to open the Send feedback fly-out. Be sure to include diagnostic data and explain the fault in detail, saying what you have tried in mitigation. If you're still not able to open the browser, open a support ticket here: https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/support/request
