Windows Server 2019 Essentials As Web Server

Hi, I wanted to know if i currently have an windows server 2019 Standard acting as an AD with users having CAL licenses, can i add a windows server essentials 2019 to the network to act as a web server which the existing users can use? The windows essentials server will log on as a user to the AD. (for internal reasons the web server cannot be hosted in the current windows server standard as it needs to be physically located separately)

If this is not possible, i assume that a second server standard is needed. In that case, can this standard server be added to the existing network without CAL license and can existing users access the web server that will be running this server?

You can but be advised that the essentials server must be a root domain controller and must run all Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles.

So since the windows Standard server 2019 is already been setup as the domain controller, i probably will not be able to use the essentials as just a simple web server keeping the standard server as the DC?

It may be possible but would not be ideal since the essentials server must be a root domain controller and must run all Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles. Better option may be to use another standard server to host the web service. If the access is from the Internet and is anonymous, a CAL isn't required.

ok I guess that answers the part of the question on the use of the essential server with an existing 2019 standard server. Thanks

Hello@Sasiraj-0422

The CAL licenses the user or device to access all Servers in your environment of the same Server OS or below.

There are two types of Windows Client Access Licenses from which to choose: device-based or user-based, also known as Windows Device CALs or Windows User CALs. This means you can choose to acquire a Windows CAL for every device (used by any user) accessing your servers, or you can choose to acquire a Windows CAL for every named user accessing your servers (from any device).

Best Regards
Karlie
