Estimate size of VM and local disk pool

Hello All,

We are planning to use MABS for backing up of our workloads in Cloud. We have estimate 700 VMs in our DC with 380 TB approx. total data.

We would like to understand the VM size whih we need to deploy in Azure IAAS along with the total disk pool to it as local storage. we will also use recovery service vault for long term storage.

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

@AryanGupta-5151 Thank you for reaching out to us!

If you are backing up Azure VMs, have you considered using Azure VM backups to Recovery Services Vaults? Quickstart - Back up a VM with the Azure portal - Azure Backup | Microsoft Docs

Also, Azure Backup is a Zero Infrastructure solution – You do not need to setup any VMs or disk/storage accounts to enable backups. Recovery Services Vaults do this automatically.

@SadiqhAhmed-MSFT : thanks for the response but we are going to use AVS solution in azure so to back up those VM running inside AVS, we need to have MABS server inplace, so for that we require local storage pool for first time backup...please help us to understand the size of MABS VM and local disk pool for our requirement mentioned above in the question.

@AryanGupta-5151 To find out local storage pool size you can use DPM Capacity planner. As far as VM size is concerned, for 700 VMs the recommendation would be to use VM with 32GB RAM and 8 CPUs. This is just recommendation the resource consumption is dependant on data churn, so you can adjust VM size accordingly.

Also can you please fill following survey where we are capturing the backup requirements for AVS. - https://aka.ms/ArcAVSBackup

@SadiqhAhmed-MSFT : Thanks for the response! I downloaded the DPM capacity planner and tried to fill it. Below is the result. Just confuse do we really need to require approx. 227 TB of local storage pool in MABS server, it will really cost a lot per month. And we will have recovery service vault also still do we require that much local storage pool for MABS?? Not sure....Please help to understand!

@AryanGupta-5151 You need to keep at least one copy of backup locally available (1 day retention). So minimum local storage required is total size of all the VMs protected plus delta (roughly 5 to 10% of total size based on your churn pattern and again capacity planner gives you exact number). Please ensure that the retention period for disk is minimal so reduce your local storage requirement. We recommend to move backups older than 5 days to recovery services vault.

Hope this helps.

@SadiqhAhmed-MSFT : Just wondering don't you think it will be very costly solution to have around 227 TB of local storage in MABS. It will cost alot per month. First we need to pay for VM for MABS and then having this long storage pool.

Not able to get it.........
