Windows 2016 Updates Stuck @ 0%

Hi, I am trying to patch a Windows 2016 box. the update process is stuck at 0% and not going any further. After sometimes it will go back to the original status asking to install the updates.
i have tried clearing software distribution folder and also tried to download the updates manually to install. But nothing works.
We are not using proxy in the environment so i have checked that too.
Any pointers to fix this would be really appreciated. this is happening mainly with almost all Windows 2016 Server OS.
i see the culprit as the 2021-01 Update for Windows Server 2016 which is the Intel MicroCode update which is not downloading nor installing. teh file itself only a 2 MB file which doesnt download nor install.

It seems that it is known issue in Client: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Server: Windows Server 2016

Please follow this link to resolve this issue.
According to the link, there is no need to uninstall the KB4601392 and the issue has been resolved in KB5001078.

KB4601392 has been rollback and don't worry that the clients will receive this update any more. We're very sorry for any inconvenience that may caused.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Regards,
Rita

I just want to confirm where the windows server 2016 clients get updates from. WSUS server or windows update?

In my opinion, there are many reason for failing to download updates. Please consider trying the below solution to confirm whether this issue will be resolved or not:

  1. Reindex the windows update component

  2. Run the following command on the 2016 server to see whether this issue will be resolved or not:

    netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie

Note that open the powershell ISE as an administrator and run the scripts.

In addition, I found a related link and please try to follow this link first to see whether this issue will be resolved or not

Please feel free to keep us in touch if there are any updates of the case.

Hope the above will be helpful. Have a nice day.

Regards,
Rita

Hi RitaHu,

We are using the windows updates to download updates,.

We have followed to reset the windows update components manually as per the MS article.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-resources

i tried manual installation of the April servicing stack and it was stuck in copying windows update to the windows cache status for hours.

In other words, nothing happening with the Windows Updates in these servers.

Updates are stuck after the installation of KB4601318. MS has suggested to reset the Windows update manually and this will fix it.

but actually it didnt fix the issue yet.

We're very sorry for any inconvenience that may caused. In avoid misunderstanding, please help to confirm the following information:

Updates are stuck after the installation of KB4601318. MS has suggested to reset the Windows update manually and this will fix it.
At first, you post on this forum to get help to confirm why the updates stuck at downloading 0% in windows server 2016. But now, the updates have downloaded and stuck installation. Right? Did all the updates stuck at installation 0%? Could you mind to provide the screenshot for reference?

In addition, did you find any error message in the windows update log?

Hi Rita,

Sorry for the confusion. Let me rephrase.

During Feb 2021, KB4601392 got installed automatically. This SSU is the problematic one.

After the installation of this KB, MS posted that any CU will be in stuck @ 23% process and will not progress further.

So, they have suggested to reset the Windows Update to fix it.. You have also posted the same thing in the first post.

We have tried resetting the Windows Update Components and it is not resolved.

FYI, i tried your script today and restarted the machine.

The update status is stuck @ 24% now. i have attached the screenshot for your reference.

Could we try to download the required updates on the Microsoft Update Catalog to see whether the needed updates will be downloaded and installed or not?

If the issue could not be resolved, even though we have try to download the required updates by Microsoft Update Catalog. Please consider sharing the windows update log to help me research further.

We could open PowerShell as an administrator and post get-windowsupdatelog command to get the log.

Hope the above will be helpful. Have a nice day.

Regards,
Rita

Open the PowerShell ISE as an administrator and then run this scripts first to reset the windows update component.

Then we could install the latest SSU(2021-04 Servicing Stack Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB5001402))

Last we could install the latest CU(KB5001347)

Hope the above will be helpful.

Rita
